APNU condemns Kissoon sacking, calls for his reinstatement

Demerara Waves –  January 24, 2012

Opposition coalition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has joined in condemning the dismissal of columnist and political science lecturer Freddie Kissoon from the University of Guyana (UG) dubbing the action a violation of academic and press freedoms.

In a statement Tuesday the coalition accused the PPP/C government of using its voting power on the UG Council to terminate the lecturer’s contract in the middle of an academic year, a few months before it would have come up for review.

“APNU regards this recent act as a violation of Kissoon’s right to freedom of expression as a columnist, academic freedom as a lecturer and civil rights as a citizen,” the statement read. Continue reading

TWEET FOR DEFEAT

By Ewalt (Waltie) Ainsworth            12-02-2011

Sometimes politicians have to be oh so careful about what they hope and pray for.  Mr. Jagdeo claims he has been rehearsing for this moment to unleash fear and terror; Mr. Ramotar claims that that is not a threat “it is a promise; us or chaos”.  And the people are vulnerable and have been tweeting “defeat” on the street.  Boat gone a falls, it can’t turn back.

A partial inventory of water cannons, vehicles, night vision goggles, mobile hospitals, guns, grenades and night sticks among other things in 29 containers, recently arrived.  President’s College and locations in Wakenaam have been identified as storage dumps and launching grounds have been listed.   Guyanese are taking you at your word and will occupy all streets if necessary so that another man can get a chance.            Continue reading

APNU makes pitch for Disciplined Forces votes

APNU makes pitch for Disciplined Forces votes

November 19, 2011 – Demerara Waves

A Partnership for National Unity Friday night used its New Amsterdam rally to appeal to the disciplined forces who will vote on Monday, a week ahead of the rest of the voting populace.

“The working people in uniform in this country like all the working people … they can’t wait until the 21st to go and cast their vote and I am confident that the masses of our sisters and brothers in uniform will go on the 21st and cast their vote next to the hand (APNU symbol) and vote APNU,” prime ministerial candidate Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine told a police estimated 6,000-strong crowd.

According to him, they will vote for the coalition, because an APNU government would not ask them to “keep their hands off the criminals.”

“We’ll be equipping them and encouraging them to lock up the criminals,” he stated. Dr. Roopnaraine added that they will increase the salaries of the police so that they can have a decent life without the resort to corruption.   Read more

Written by Denis Scott Chabrol – Demerara Waves

President Bharrat Jagdeo, wary of the impact that voter-apathy can have on the Peoples Progressive Party Civic’s chances of being re-elected for a fifth straight term, has warned constituents that if they do not vote, the party could lose the November 28 polls.“You matter, your vote matters. Every single vote is valuable. If we don’t cast that vote, it’s a waste. Opposition, civil society team up to get Sharma’s ban lifted

03 October 2011 – Demerara Waves

The opposition coalition A Peoples Partnership for National Unity (APNU), civil society and the Alliance For Change (AFC) on Monday collectively began planning to pressure government into lifting a four-month old ban on the privately-owned CNS TV6 television station.

At the centre of the decision by President Bharrat Jagdeo- the Information Minister to suspend the station’s operations is because of a Tony Vieira commentary on May 4, 2011 for which the station and Vieira have since been sued and the Advisory Committee on Broadcasting has gotten involved.

Participants of the strategy meeting included representatives of the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC), Red Thread, Guyana Human Rights Association (GHRA) and religious organisations.      more
