Jamaica plans US$9 billion Logistics Hub initiative

KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) — Investors have expressed a willingness to pump over US$9 billion in the Jamaican government’s global logistics hub initiative.This was disclosed by chairman of the Logistics and Investment Task Force in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Dr Eric Deans, who noted that, with this initiative, Jamaica has the opportunity “to attract the best investors, contractors and developers.”“By attracting businesses to our hub, we will allow them to fully integrate into the global trading system (which) will provide tens of thousands of jobs and in the process we will establish Jamaica as the fourth global logistics hub; the other three being Singapore, Rotterdam and Dubai,” Deans said on Wednesday April 17.

The government’s initiative is aimed at taking advantage of the anticipated increase in maritime activities from the expansion of the Panama Canal, which is expected to be completed in 2015.  Continue reading

Seven parties submit Lists on Nomination Day

Seven political parties submitted their Lists of Candidates on Nomination Day, Thursday as required to contest the November 28 General and Regional Elections with only that of the incumbent People’s Progressive Party/Civic being in order.

Some 32 parties had initially shown interest in contesting the elections and GECOM last week said they expected the number to drop to around 11.

The others submitting were the opposition coalition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU); Alliance For Change (AFC); The United Force (TUF); Horizon and Star; East Berbice Development Association (EBDA), and the Fundamental Structure Group (FSG).    more

The festival of Diwali has been celebrated for ages and grows in attraction by the year. Diwali means a row or cluster of lights which symbolizes Light over Darkness, Knowledge over Ignorance, Good over Evil and Love over Hate.

Diwali falls on the lunar month of Kartik meaning the month of Ocotober or November on the darkest night of the Hindu lunar year.   This year the festival is celebrated on Friday day 5th day of   November 2010. This is an occasion for the young and the old, men and women, rich and poor – for everyone irrespective of their religious and economic background who seeks light, knowledge and love.

The festival is celebrated throughout the world to ward off the darkness and welcome the light into our lives and as William Shakespeare said “see yea that light yonder so shines a good deed in a naughty world”. This festival is celebrated on a grand scale in almost all the regions of India and is looked upon mainly as the beginning of New Year. As such the blessings of Lakshmi, the celestial consort of Lord Vishnu is invoked with prayers.

Diwali is also celebrated outside India mainly in Australia, Barbados, Britain, Canada, Guyana, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar (Burma), Nepal, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago and the United States of America among the Hindus world over. Places as far as Southern America have record of celebrating Diwali.  Continue reading
