Son of late President Dr. Cheddi Jagan on Monday appeared poised to endorse Donald Ramotar’s presidential candidacy for the governing Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) 2011 general election.

In a statement to a few media-houses, Joey Jagan attributed his decision to disunity in the opposition camps and his desire to carry on the legacy of his father who died in 1997 of a heart attack.           Continue reading

The Justice For All Party (JFAP) has joined the opposition coalition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) but party leader CN Sharma will not be on the candidates’ list.

The APNU at its Monday news conference disclosed that the popular television station owner has signed a declaration committing his party’s support to the coalition.

A statement from the JFAP which was read at the briefing outlined that the party’s national executive decided to give its “unequivocal support” to APNU after discussing the coalition’s Declaration, Statement of Principles and Unity Charter.    Continue reading

Edmundo Ros in 1949 Edmundo Ros introduced Latin beats to UK audiences

Band leader Edmundo Ros, the man credited with popularising Latin American music in the UK, has died at the age of 100.

His death was confirmed by showbusiness charity the Grand Order of Water Rats.

Secretary John Adrian said: “He died last night peacefully at his home in Spain, two months short of his 101st birthday”.

Ros received an OBE for services to entertainment in the New Year Honours of 2000. Continue reading

ORLANDO, Florida – October 22, 2011 – A panel of judges chose PATH to FREEDOM: My Story of Perseverance to be a Second Place Winner in the Autobiography/Memoir category of the 2011 Royal Palm Literary Awards Competition. The Florida Writers Association recognized the book during their Tenth Annual Conference last weekend. Guyanese-born Conrad Taylor accepted the honor at the Royal Palm Literary Award Banquet Saturday night(October 22, 2011). Then, the 1973 West Point graduate not only received a beautiful plaque, but the right to place an RPLA silver seal on his book covers.            Continue reading

Letter: Not to debate is not an option

To the Editor:

As was reported in the press, a week ago, a candidate’s refusal to debate is not acceptable to many Guyanese.

In the political arena it is best for the electorate to receive as much information on the candidate as possible.

Any candidate who refuses to debate is hiding an attribute, that if known, would exclude him from being elected President.

I don’t think that there is a valid reason for any candidate to recuse himself from joining a debate of equals.            Continue reading

Gadhafi’s Death in Perspective

Rebel fighter killed former Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi on Oct. 20 outside the town of Sirte. His body was then brought back to Misurata, where it was filmed being dragged through the streets. Several close aides, including family members, have been reported killed or captured as well.

Gadhafi’s death is symbolically important for the rebels, but the fall of Sirte is even more significant for the effect it will have on the future stability of Libya. With the final holdout of the pro-Gadhafi resistance overtaken, the National Transitional Council (NTC) can now move to form a transitional government.  Continue reading

Guyana’s Anuradha Dev has been declared this year’s Best Overall Performer at the region-wide Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations.The 15-year-old Queen’s College (QC) girl also secured the Best Performing Student in Science award, Education Minister Shaik Baksh revealed at a news conference on October 21.
