The government has settled on making Monday, Election Day, a public holiday, a  senior government official has confirmed. The official said it would be a full holiday instead of a partial one for schools. The same had been done for the 2006 general and regional elections..

Representation for such a move had come from the Private Sector Commission (PSC) and the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG), even as the opposition coalition APNU on Thursday disagreed with such a call.  According to the APNU’s Lance Carberry, making the day a holiday would pose transportation problems for the voting public.

.The Home Affairs Ministry is expected to make the public proclamation shortly.

As A Guyanese at Heart I am hoping and praying that APNU wins the upcoming election, mainly because I see Guyana as a country of six races and the distribution of power should be equally disbursed to it,s people.

As a child growing up in Guyana I had utter respect for people of high profile both of Indian and African. important Indian appointees were Pandit Narine Sharma (Speaker of the House) Minister Shahabadeen, S S Ramphal and I could go on and on. Never mind your color creed or religion, Burnham had Indians as ministers of his government. That is the Guyana that I know and love. Jagdeo has totally destroyed Guyana.

Today is Sunday. November 27, 2011, the eve of general elections in Guyana. Today in the Anglican christian calendar is also the first day of Advent. Advent is the time of preparation of the coming of the Son of God, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. If christianity is your belief, then you know that Christ has come and will come again to judge us humans all. Not Black, White, Indian,Chinese, etc. But all of us. I am sure that in every religion there is the overwhelming belief that sooner or later we will all be judged by that highest power for what we have done or for what we have left undone. Will this be the coming of a real new start for Guyana?

Tomorrow the people of Guyana will be choosing those persons that have promised to do what is needed to make Guyana a unified country. I pray that whichever God my Guyanese brothers and sisters at home believe in leads them to make the right decision, not for themselves alone but for our Dear Land of Guyana.
If you’ve read the latest post about the 3 major political parties contesting this election you would have found that they are remarkably similar in their wish for a “unified” Guyana. Only time will tell whether these wishes/promises are from the heart or whether they are just to get the votes of the too-often misled Guyanese people.
Change is possible. But change also requires that all persons work to accomplsh it. And when wounds are deep and our people have been taught for generations to hate each other, change will take time. But who could have foreseen the breaking down of the Berlin Wall? Who could foretell that there would be a black president leading the United States of America?
This is not to say that we have to forget our past. On the contrary, if we don’t know where we came from we will not know where we are going.
Our fathers and their fathers before them and their fathers before them were all brought to these West Indian shores, including Guyana, to work the land. Now the land that we work for really belongs to us all.
Guyana is for Guyanese, not for blacks or indians or whites or chinese or portuguese or whatever.
And here I’m going to say something that will rub some people the wrong way but so be it. Guyana is for Guyanese, first, last and always. If you do not regard yourself as a Guyanese then go to wherever you think you belong and leave Guyana to be developed, by people who are proud to be known as Guyanese, into the great country it is envisioned to be. But please do not try to split our beautiful country into an Afro-Guyana or an Indo-Guyana.

So, is this the time that our Guyanese people will finally put aside all our racial, ethnic, class, economic differences and put our dream of a unified Guyana in the forefront? Or will Guyana continue to suffer the shame of having elected people who are there only for their own personal and/or political gain?
We all know it takes a Mahatma Gandhi or a Martin Luther King and a long time of suffering to open our eyes to what we should be doing right.
We all have heard the mantra that Guyana has the potential to be the saving country of the West Indies with its vast land mass for agricultural, mineral, industrial and housing development. But are we ready for this? Or are we still too young and stupid to see the light of salvation for a unified country? Will we remain the laughing stock of the West Indies, or will we finally get together as a nation of Guyana and work with the other Caribbean countries to our rightful position in the world? The answer my Guyanese brothers and sisters lies within the power of the people who will be elected tomorrow. Let us all pray for them. Let us pray that those who are elected by the people will truly work for the betterment of the country and therefore for the betterment of the Guyanese people.
