MASCOBEE… A BOXING DAY SAGA – by Waltie Ainsworth

MASCOBEE…A BOXING DAY SAGA

By: Ewalt ‘Waltie’ Ainsworth                   12 19 2011

Mascobee was a visible minority, and “witless Putagee bastard,” according to his father.  He was a constant annoyance, practiced bestiality, lied on patacake, connoisseur, vagabond and a dam scamp; separately and sometimes all together.

One Christmas holiday season, he was caught on the seawall penetrating a crab hole.  Word spread quickly in the community about Putagee Joe (alias Mascobee), pursuing happiness in the mud and that did not stop him.  Mascobee almost lost a vital part of his anatomy as a blue crab disregarded his chants for help making multiple incisions below his waist. Guyana’s premium timbers being exported as logs – Bulkan

The trend has been for the conversion of premium Guyana timbers into top quality flooring, furniture in India and China

Stabroek News December 18, 2011 – Letters |  Comments

Dear Editor,

In mid-2011 there was concern about a shortage of construction lumber on the domestic market.  At the beginning of a new quinquennium of government, and having the election manifesto commitments of the three largest parties, it is appropriate to extract those commitments and compare them with the latest export figures.

The PPP/C reduced its half-page on forestry in 2006 to a single paragraph in 2011– “Encourage more value-added forestry by working closely with all stakeholders on addressing constraints while continuing to support the development of our timber and non-timber resources in a sustainable way consistent with the LCDS.”       Continue reading

A Christmas Story: A True Story of a Holiday Miracle

A Christmas Story: A True Story of a Holiday Miracle
By: John Harricharan
Long, long ago, in a small, tropical village in a
country far, far away, a little boy lived with his
parents in a two room house. He could not have been
more than four or five years old and his entire
experience of life was limited to the fishing and
farming village, his neighbors and friends.
.
It wasn’t that the little boy was unhappy. Given his
situation, he was a rather cheerful, optimistic lad,
but times were hard for his parents. The village was
recovering from the recent floods that had wiped out
his parents livelihood. And the Christmas holidays were
just around the corner.

Now, in this little village of long ago, people of
various religions lived and worked together in harmony.
Everyone enjoyed each other’s religious holidays and
everyone looked forward to the celebrations where
Christians, Hindus, Muslims and others would gather.
The parents would provide gifts for the children and
little boys and little girls would squeal with delight
as they played with their simple toys.     Continue reading

YARROW at YULETIDE – by Waltie Ainsworth

YARROW  AT YULETIDE

(see the definition of YARROW at the end of this article)

By Ewalt ‘Waltie’ Ainsworth                   12 17 2011

Talk fuh sun and talk fuh rain, Christmas time is much more than  the feast, the conkie, the souse, the float,  the cake, the pepperpot, the garlic pork, the shine rice, the guava cheese and oil down.  It is also a time to sit together, compare notes, plant a seed,  rearrange your thoughts, take stock and take care of each other;  love your neighbor as you love yourself.  It is pointless putting it off till next year Christmas.  Now is the time.

The new currency is diversity and plurality and to  reach out to your neighbor in spite of how difficult it may seem, brings a certain calm, a certain grace rather than the constant bark and yarrow that we think is normal and acceptable in the 592 republic.  The barrel come, share the contents.  Take what is yours and free up what is not yours.  And you will not have to yarrow anytime soon; not now, not later.    Continue reading
