Superficial city cleanups for appearances sake

Shortly before the start of the recently concluded 13th Caribbean Sustainable Tourism Development Conference the Government Information Agency (GINA) issued a media release in which it announced that government was partnering with the private sector to ‘spruce up’ the city so that our visitors could experience a more wholesome capital than that which those of us who live here must live with, day in, day out.

A similar initiative had been announced prior to Cricket World Cup five years ago, the assumption being, it seems, that a selective, superficial tidying up of parts of the city is enough to alter the impression gleaned not only by foreigners who live and work here for extended periods, but people from the Caribbean who visit and travel around in our city and who certainly take with them a more realistic impression of the state of the city when they leave. It is, to say the least, an absurd notion.  [more]

Any initiative to spruce up the city should be welcomed. I think we have to get over this blame game, pointing fingers, and all nastyness that goes with it, and for once lend our support to any initiative to make our city look better than it is.

As Guyana assumes more and more significant roles within the the Caribbean and the world at large, we have to present a wholesome stage. This is commonsense and it is necessary. Furthermore these initiatives help to create more and more jobs for the unemployed.

We have reached a stage in our history where we have to forget differences, come together as one nation, not as a divided people such that has plagues us for decades.

We ought to give our support to the Government, any Government as long as it had been democratically elected ,and let it carry out its policies that it fought the elections on.Disapproval should be kep for the ballot boxes and as such, lets cooperate for once and live like a decent caring soiety that we once were.

What significant role can Guyana play in the world arena? It seems as though you are in a delusional state of mind Mr Ramnarace. Guyana has lost its crediblity because of its corruption and lawlessness behavior This country has been in a state of decay for many years. What has happened to Guyana did not occur overnight, this was and is a downright RAPE of a beautiful country, by those who believe that Guyana is part and parcel of their heritage. You would like us to forget our past but our past is our HISTORY. A country without a history is doomed to failure because from our Past we can correct our future.

Besides, you are asking for support, since when we have all become so patriotic? Please!!!! Don’t pee on my feet and tell me its raining!!!!

Don’t be too hard on Ramnarace – he is just being positve and a possible government supporter, while you seem somewhat the opposite. Guyana is better off than you may think and he less than he thinks. The truth is that government and opposition should agree to take over drainage and sanitation from from M&CC until they can do the job themselves. Why not show some patriotism than bitterness, or we will continue the decay you speak of. The opposition must determine how the can get the government to bring about positbve change.

“What significant role can Guyana play in the world arena?”
I would like to recommend a book “Hot, Flat, and Crowded” by Thomas Friedman. It is thought provoking.
