Rihanna and Shontelle mix business with pleasure in Barbados
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Friday August 10, 2012 – Barbadian international recording stars Rihanna and Shontelle mixed business with pleasure on their recent trips home to take in the climax of Crop Over, the country’s biggest annual festival.
On Kadooment day, August 6, Rihanna was seen partying on Spring Garden Highway, liming with friends and celebrating Crop Over’s last lap.
She traded the skimpy gear she sported last year, as one of the thousands of costumed revellers jumping on the road at Kadooment 2011, in favour of a polka-dotted bra under an open white shirt with black stripes and a matching Trapstar cap in what emerged as a New York Yankees masquerade.
The shirt later became less visible, and in a series of shots posted on the singer’s Twitter page she appeared to be having a bucket of fun as she drank from a large silver pail. “My bad” the Umbrella girl tweeted alongside one of the photos.
The pictures were uploaded just days after the Princess of China singer was dropped by skincare company Nivea on the grounds that she was considered too outrageous to represent the brand.
As things turned out, Nivea’s loss was Barbados’ gain as the Grammy award-winner signed a three-year contract with the Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) to promote the island. The campaign is expected to get underway shortly and will be launched in time for the winter tourist season.
The BTA is also “working closely” with other Barbadian international celebrities like Shontelle and R&B group Cover Drive, according to the authority’s chairman Adrian Elcock.
Rihanna was also spotted in the company of media mogul Oprah Winfrey on her recent trip. The talk show doyenne interviewed the 24-year-old star for her show Oprah’s Next Chapter to be aired on August 19.
While Rihanna kept her visit home mainly low-key, singer and songwriter Shontelle was up front and centre, headlining Cohoblopot, a massive soca party at Kensington Oval that is one of the dominant events on the Crop Over calendar.
Shontelle’s near hour-and-a-half-long performance included her hit R&B single T-Shirt and soca tune Colours, which she performed with local artiste Natahlee.
