President Donald Ramotar on Monday May 6 2013, rallied his East Indian support-base in East Berbice warning them that food shortages could return if the opposition regains power.

He was at the time at the Albion Sports Complex Ground addressing the opening of an International Mela organised by the Indian Arrival Committee (IAC), regarded in some quarters as a governing Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) front group. The event was held in honour of the 175th anniversary of the arrival of East Indians to Guyana to work as indentured labourers.

He appealed for unity to prevent the progress made so far from being reversed. “Never again to return when we couldn’t have flour and bread and roti in our shops or we could not have split peas for our dhal or we could not have potatoes for our function,” he said. “Never again must we allow Guyana to return to those days.”    [Read more]
