Beyond the populated coastal areas of early Guyana, rivers formed the natural highways, winding inland where undisturbed impenetrable vegetation closes in upon its banks. It was in the latter part of the 1700s that a family of Allicocks sailed 65 miles up the Demerary[1] River and decided to drop anchor at a location called Noitgedacht and would call it home for centuries.
One of the most common names still found in Upper Demerara is Allicock and the story of this family is interwoven within the history of the area and historical Guyana.
The journey of the original Allicock settlers is thought to be originating out of England via the colonies of America, before entering the Caribbean and Demerara. The actual name was also altered from its original form and probably on entrance into America as history appears to point to. Read More »

Wow! Dmitri. this is a rich piece of Guyanese history and remarkable work of genealogy relating to the Allicock family of British Guiana (Guyana). I applaud you and your family members for being able to trace your roots so far back in Guyana…to the “latter part of the 1700s.
I would be bold enough to think of you and the Allicock family as an integral part of Guyanese history….. much like Guyanese royalty.

Why were you both named ! Names given to siblings at birth fascinates me…..

My mother a devout catholic (religion Her opium) named me after the bishop
who “initiated” the dream of “Brickdam Cathedral” first church to acquire
that cathedral status after St Georges.
Religion is a very “addictive” part of Guyana culture….

My mother was blessed with 5 sons and 2 daughters.
Her dream remains unfulfilled….no Priests or Nuns in any of her
siblings or the 60+ grandchildren of my grandmother who had 14
Children….one of the 14 also reproduced another 14 siblings….
My family (bloodline) transgresses the globe today….
The Portuguese not unlike the Chinese Indians and African in the then
BRITISH GUIANA did not interbreed outside their ethnic orientation…a tradgedy
in today’s scientific explanations…they were also “privileged” as of European
extraction…
They were indentured labourers ! So were Indians…African slaves replacement
on the abolishment of slavery by Queen Victoria…Maybe that is why
Forbes Linden Sampson Burnham allowed her statue outside Law Courts to remain….it stands there today !…he was not only a Guyana scholar but went on to be a QC (queens council) an honourable aclolade…few awarded for brilliance in law and its understanding.
I can go on and on but must get on with my book I started sometime ago…
HOOKERS …as I have visited many institutions as I travel not only for pleasure but
research for my book….one of the oldest professions of our planet…
Jesus befriended Magdeline also in his travels….why I can but speculate…

Thanks for sharing the origin of your name and a small part of your family history. The prodigious bearing of children by your grandparents and one of their children is impressive….14 children! Of course, in those days in British Guiana family planning was not an issue…and there was no television. Ha!Ha!. I know of many families that had 9 and 10 children including one of my aunts and uncle.
The origin of my name is not as interesting as yours. Unfortunately, I was not named after any dignitary or anyone famous. I learned from my late mother that it was my grandfather who selected my first name. and basically I assumed my father’s name as my surname.
I must admit I admire your wit in your writing…. sometimes subtle… and your candor in politely expressing your thoughts and opinions. You appear to be knowledgeable on many topics. I assume you read a lot.
I’m sure your book, HOOKERS, will be an interesting read when it’s completed. Especially, if you have a voracious appetite for practical research. Ha! Ha!

Hence my preference to cricket as a sport before football….although football
is more Global today….more exciting to “spectate” more internationalist.

I do follow the cricket here when in UK as it is usually live on SKY TV…..
The shorter limited overs game a lot more entertaining…cricket is more a
tactical game than football in my opinion.
As for my “voracious” appetite in research …at 69 ” superman ” is still manly…
“super” is a title best used to describe women…I admire feminism but detest
feminists….women are certainly the future….proactive, procreative and
certainly more productive.

If my memory serves me ….Dimitri was a gladiator who fought in many Roman arenas….I think he refused to “kill” one of his contenders who he had disarmed
and was himself “punished” for it…..in Barbaric Roman times this was considered “ungentlemanly” “antisocial” especially if the spectators shouted for “blood” !
The Caesars were clever … Thumbs up or down decided “live or die” in the arena…
If the rabble was loud enough in favour of death….it was thumbs down for the looser…..sometimes a painful and slow one…..
Christians were also used in the arena …fed to lions to entertain the pagans of their newly conquered nationals.
As for my book on Hookers my last encounter in ElEjido southern Spain in a pole dancing club was absolute entertainment….I was falling in love with a beautiful
blonde bombshell from Moscow….one of the many of Putin’s ambassadors who
was recruited by the mafiaosa of Moscow..she was also falling in love with me
but her performance “task” was called to question so our relationship had to be
curtailed….she told me most moscowvites were vodkaholics because of the
severe winter cold-30c….husbands would beat their wives and the authorities would turn a blind eye….

I’d assume since you have been living in England for many years, you probably have a lot of ready material for a book, but I guess you want to make it more interesting by including your global experiences.
I recalled on my first visit to London, I was doing a lot of sightseeing on foot, with my wife. We were somewhere in the vicinity of the theater district and as we were passing through what must have been “a red light area”, I was boldly solicited by two skimpily dressed women….even though my wife was clinging to me. Needlessly to say I was flattered and flabbergasted. Ha! Ha!
I’m sure your visit to Rio will be exciting. Of course, a visit to the beach is a must. As we all know, Brazilian women are known for their almost nude G-strings attire, more like dental floss, which perhaps gives the impression of squeaky clean cracks and crevices. Ha! Ha! You’ll probably get hooked. I myself have a weakness for beautiful women. Incidentally, you could visit Georgetown too for more hooker material, since you’ll be in the neighborhood.

I started researching my book on retirement a few years ago
….of course during my military service in RAF I visited most of the RAF
bases abroad and in UK as a bachelor boy….. it was the norm to visit the “houses of angels” as they were described….even my mother recognised /identified the name when my naive twin brother asked her what it was….she burst out in loud laughter….my mother had her wits about her even in her 93 year before her peaceful exit in her sleep….hope I live to emulate her.
