Settlement Patterns of Guyanese Immigrants in New York: A Perspective – By Lear Matthews

Settlement Patterns of Guyanese Immigrants in New York: A Perspective

By Lear Matthews

New York City Boroughs Map

New York City Boroughs Map

Reaction to the recent announcement by the president of the United States on the status of millions of immigrants is quite revealing.  What has been a topic of some national importance has become a highly charged, simmering social issue churned by politics, economics and sentiments relating to ethnocentric ideals. The outcome of the Executive Action will affect some Caribbean immigrants among others, but a few who are eligible, may be understandably hesitant to take advantage of correcting their undocumented status.

This article does not address the ramifications of the president’s administrative relief. However, because the topic of immigration is on the front burner, this is an opportune time to share an important dimension of Guyanese immigrants’ experience, i.e. their settlement patterns in New York, particularly since they comprise the 5th largest immigrant group in New York City (Jamaicans being the 4th largest).  Continue reading

For millennia, humankind has been plagued with some form of inequality among its populations. As our societies grew, increased in complexity, and became globalized, so did the nature and degree of inequality.

Like a living human organism, inequality has a gender, race, ethnicity, and class that determine income and wealth disparities. To make matters worse, inequality dictates our access to a home, education, healthcare, and protection under our justice system.

Faced with racial inequality, the majority African-American community of Ferguson, Missouri, has received no justice for Mike Brown, an eighteen-year-old black male killed by a white policeman in August 2014.

Matchless consumer advocate Eileen Cox is a ‘Special Person’

March 14, 2010 | By | Filed Under News

“I am fearless. I have no relatives who would be victimised because of what I say or do. I criticise whomever, whenever it is prudent to do so. I have criticised the police for excesses; I have stuck my neck out for defenceless consumers and I nurture no fear.”

Private jet, private money, private space in a drug country – commentary

Private jet, private money, private space in a drug country

November 29, 2014 | By |  Features / Columnists, Freddie Kissoon

The US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is a strange outfit. Only God can actually tell a Guyanese how the DEA operates with regard to its surveillance in Guyana. There are times you want to believe that Guyana is not on the DEA radar at all, or that the DEA has little interest in extirpating drug trafficking and money laundering in this country. It could be that the DEA is not the formidable and competent organization that the world thinks it is.

In Guyana, the average limer across a “110th Street” (a term in local lingo, taken from the famous Anthony Quinn movie on police racism and drug trafficking in the ghetto titled, across 110th Street), the inner core of Georgetown, knows who the drug traffickers and money launderers are. “Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage? Continue reading

Update from Moray House Trust- November 2014 for Guyanese Online

Figure 1- Waldyke Prince

Waldyke Prince

In October 2014, two presentations at Moray House Trust highlighted the raw and unspoilt beauty of much of Guyana. First, veteran local bird-guide and wildlife biologist, Waldyke (Wally) Prince outlined the possibilities for birding tourism in Guyana. With close to 900 species of birds in Guyana, including 284 in Georgetown, this is more of a realistic prospect than some might imagine. Prince has led expeditions of professional birders, documentary teams and scientific research for many years.

Coastal birding hot spots

Shell Beach, Lake Mainstay, Hope Beach and the Abary River are just some of the coastal birding hot spots identified.
