Earthquake off Barbados’ coast felt in Guyana

This US Geological Surveys map depicts the epicentre of the two earthquakes off the coast of Barbados.
The United States Geological Services (USGS) has reported a number of earthquakes in the region. The most intense were two quakes within four hours off the coast of Barbados.
This morning a 5.3 magnitude earthquake also struck at 7:01. This second tremor was reported by the (USGS) as having a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter Scale. It was located at 116 kilometers North East off Bathsheba, Barbados at about 11:16 AM.
The second tremor rattled several areas of Guyana Here is a comment from a resident.
“I sat down here and the whole place shaking. I in Festival City and the whole place rocking,” a resident in Festival City, North Ruimveldt told Demerara Waves Online News.
At Eccles, East Bank Demerara a number of residents there panicked and ran out of their homes.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Thursday July 16, 2015 – Six earthquakes struck to the northeast of Barbados this morning in the space of six hours – three of them within minutes of each other and the strongest of which prompted the evacuation of some buildings across the island.
After a 5.7 magnitude tremor was recorded at 7:01 a.m., and then another at 7:52 a.m., a stronger 6.4 magnitude quake shook the island, sending residents scampering out of buildings, around 11:16 a.m.
The others followed at 11:29 a.m. (4.1 magnitude), 11:36 a.m. (5.3 magnitude) and 12:23 p.m. (3.8 magnitude).
They were also felt in neighbouring St. Lucia, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Vincent and Martinique.
While preliminary information had put all the quakes at a depth of 10 km – the depth assigned when data is too poor to compute a reliable depth for an earthquake – the Seismic Research Centre indicated that the actual depths ranged from 61 km to 111 km.

Nationals in at least seven Caribbean nations reported feeling the earth literally shake yesterday.
The UWI Seismic Unit reported 6 earthquakes north-east of Barbados. According to the Unit, the quakes occurred in the morning at 07:01, 7:52, 11:16, 11:29 and at 11:36 and in the afternoon at12:23 pm EST.
The earthquakes were reportedly felt throughout Barbados, St. Vincent, Grenada, St. Lucia, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana. No damage or injuries were reported.
The quakes magnitudes ranged from 3.4 to 6.4 and depths from 61km to 111 km.
The first was placed at 5.0 degrees on the open Richter scale at 06:31 local time in the northeast of Trinidad and Tobago and with a depth of 35.9 kilometers. That quake also was felt in Venezuela.
The University then reported another quake of 5.7 degrees at 07:01 northeast of Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, which was also felt in the neighboring islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Dominica.
This earthquake was followed by three 6.4, 4.1 and 5.3 degrees between 11:16 and 11:36 am, all off the Barbadian coasts.
However, officials said there was no threat of a major tsunami affecting the Eastern Caribbean.

As more drilling activities gain ground, this is something folks will have to come to accept as the price to pay for chasing greed. I’m reading about the heavy rains and flooding in Guyana and am wondering what the situation would look like in the likely event of an EXXON oil spill during a flood…a whole lot of dead bodies floating everywhere. Good for America bad for Guyana.
