Why do so many people hate US airports? – BBC News Magazine

Why do so many people hate US airports?

Travellers in a long check-in line at LaGuardia Airport in 2015

Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel periods in the US, with millions criss-crossing the country, often by air, to get home for their family dinner – and back again a couple of days later. But air travellers in the US often find the experience frustrating enough to voice bitter complaints. What went wrong?

The Wright Brothers may have given birth to modern aviation on a beach at Kitty Hawk, but US airports these days are far from world-beating.

They are consistently outshone by their Asian rivals in world rankings.   Continue reading

The Paris climate negotiations, explained – video

The Paris climate negotiations, explained

Published on Oct 27, 2015
Has anyone ever tried to convince you to order something off a menu that you couldn’t afford? Or had a friend buy an expensive appetizer and assume you’ll help split the bill? The dynamic isn’t too far from what’s happening in climate policy right now, with hypocritical, richer countries trying to convince poorer countries that green energy is the way forward. At the end of November, diplomats will gather in Paris for the most high-stakes dinner party yet: Their orders are likely to affect our collective climate future. Check out our video above for all the savory details.

The Lie We Live

UPDATE: Published on Oct 28, 2016

The Lie We Live (2015) is a short film written & created by myself, Spencer Cathcart, which I originally published in January 2015. It received over 22 million views, however was taken down due to a ridiculous copyright complaint for a couple very short bits of footage I used I had to reupload it (it was fair use but YouTube still removed it). I also licensed new music to avoid any issues in the future.

The Reign of Absurdiocy – international terrorism” – By Uri Avnery

The Reign of Absurdiocy

28/11/15 – Uri Avnery

There is no such thing as “international terrorism”.
To declare war on “international terrorism” is nonsense. Politicians who do so are either fools or cynics, and probably both.

Terrorism is a method of operation. It is often used by oppressed peoples, including the French Resistance to the Nazis in WW II. We would laugh at anyone who declared war on “international resistance”.Terrorism is a weapon. Like a cannon. We would laugh at somebody who declares war on “international artillery”. A cannon belongs to an army, and serves the aims of that army. The cannon of one side fire against the cannon of the other.

Carl von Clausewitz, the Prussian military thinker, famously said that “war is the continuation of politics by other means”. If he had lived with us today, he might have said: “Terrorism is a continuation of policy by other means.”  Continue reading

Walter Rodney and the 3rd Regime – By Eusi Kwayana

Walter Rodney and the 3rd Regime – By Eusi Kwayana

The time has come for direct challenges on the issue of Walter Rodney’s unnatural death which international as well as Guyanese police experts determined from material found at the crime scene was caused by an electronically triggered device.  Rodney was then 38 and his message of “People’s Power, no Dictator!” had become an article of faith among thousands upon thousands in the post-colonial world outside the corridors of power.

Earlier deaths of political figures like  Vincent Teekah, Ohene Koama and Edward Dublin, though suspected by many of being politically motivated, had been treated as unworthy of any investigation. In the case of Walter Rodney, after 12 years the regime presiding over his uninvestigated death gave way to another which after many  pressures  saw the passage in 2005 of a unanimous resolution of the National Assembly ordering an international inquiry into  the death.   Continue reading

Old Calypsos: B.G. Bhaji; Jimmy Black Pudding and Souse; The Weed Song – By Bill Rogers

Real Old Guyana Calypso – Bill Rogers

Here are three really vintage Guyanese calypso recordings by Bill Rogers (Real name Augustus Hinds), a very popular Guyanese singer from the 1930’s and 1940’s. This type of music was called “Shanto”. Have a listen and a laugh at the lyrics as they scrool down as the music is played.   Enjoy!!

B.G. BHAJI

B.G.(which stood for British Guiana in Bill Rogers’ time )was probably his most popular song. It was re-made by other artistes and was also used in commercial jingles.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced on Friday that Russia would be suspending its visa-free travel agreement with Turkey, in light of Turkey’s decision to shoot down a Russian warplane earlier this week.

The suspension, which will make it harder for Russians to travel to Turkey, is likely to have a significant negative impact on Turkey’s economy.

Russians account for a huge portion of Turkey’s tourism industry. About 3.3 million Russian tourists visited Turkey in 2014, the second-largest number of tourist arrivals after Germany and around 12% of total visitors, according to ReutersContinue reading
