There is No Room For Hate in America

By Dr. Dhanpaul Narine

Putting the Hindu flag at the back of the yard is like standing at the back of the bus. These flags should proudly adorn the front of Hindu homes as a symbol of peace and love and security should be provided to ensure that they are not desecrated.

The United States of America is the land of Liberty. It is a beacon of hope for many that leave the fear and repression in their countries to fi nd freedom in the home of the brave. When people hurt America through hate it should be condemned and outlawed because it goes against the ideals of our country.

Despite its imperfections our democracy works and it is a model for others to follow. There are those that may find our democracy inconsistent with their beliefs. They have the option to return to their countries of origin and help to create the society of their choice in those places.

The trouble now in America is that the “room for hate” is growing ever larger. Those spewing hate seek to divide us. The growing national security state imprisons us all – regardless of our race, ethnicity, religious, or other perceived difference.

“Despite its imperfections our democracy works and it is a model for others to follow. There are those that may find our democracy inconsistent with their beliefs. They have the option to return to their countries of origin and help to create the society of their choice in those places.”

Funny that the Dr. is spewing the same intolerance that breeds the hate he is condemning. Clearly, too, the Dr. is not versed in American history, or he would know that:
    (1) America’s history is riddled with intolerance toward the original peoples of America, and immigrants (Irish, Scottish, Italians, Polish, Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Hispanics, Africans, Indians,Jews, and many others).

    (2) America is not a democracy and was never a democracy.

It is people like the Dr. here – the ignorant and intolerant – who are responsible for America being the way it is.

“History is baggage!” That was my excuse for not applying myself to studying the subject at school. I, for one, do not regret my ignorance of American History. My ignorance provides a clean slate for observing and recording the American History as I know and live it in the 21st Century.
You see, I have some experience of the “hate” that can be incubated and hatched over time. The bumper sticker, “Limey go Home”; the rabble rousing, “Massa Day Done!”; and the political sloganeering, “Apan Jhaat!” are, in my considered opinion, some inflection points which originated in a perverse persistence on this subject that they call “History”.
I recognize and appreciate “consciousness” versus “conflict”.
An example of the former sentiment was my grandfather saying with pride, “India get ‘e independence widout raising waan gun pon anybady else.” I shared his feeling then; and now.
What is wrong with my taking this kernel of wholesomeness with me to a foreign land and planting it?” The destruction of (Hanuman) Jhandi flags by members of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, on the Corentyne, in 1953, because they were red – therefore Communist – was founded on ignorance. The burning of Jhandi flags of all colors in Woodhaven in 2015 is also founded on ignorance; but this time the ignorance has a tincture of violence.
I contend that there is a progression starting with ignorance; to violence; to battles; and to war!
I am with Dr. Dhanpaul and group who stand up to be counted – for peace and goodwill on the planet.
What better time to start than at Christmas.

There is a popular myth that not a shot was fired for Indian Independence. Outside of India, few seem to be aware of the Indian National Army of Subhas Chandra Bose or of Bhagat Singh. In 1946, after the war, the last straw for the British was the Royal Indian Navy mutiny, which only the Communist party supported

“Despite its imperfections our (US) democracy works and it is a model for others to follow”
If he had said this of the British model I would be more incline to agree. Both right and left agree the US political system is bankrupt. That’s why Congress has a 13 percent approval rating. Listen to Senator Sanders for a 101 on this subject.

I guess one of my problems with history is that it does look like mythology – sometimes. Another difficulty is its continuum. I always viewed the Berbice Slave Rebellion as an Industrial dispute; but it was tied in with Guyana’s adopting its “Republic” stature some 200 years later – hence the uprising became the earliest event in the struggle for independence.
It is a shortcoming of my thought processes that my mind is unable to make that connection.

Happens all the time. What the British called the Sepoy Mutiny is now referred to as India‘s First war of Independence.

The fact that it happens all the time is neither a conclusive nor convincing argument for me. I want to thank you, Thinker, for your engaging comments. In my mind, relationships fall into two categories. Visualize two bar magnets. One set of relationships (family) are like the opposite poles. They attract; and are attracted whether we like it or not. The other set of relationships are comparable to the like poles of the magnet. The is a respectful and respected space in which we can agree to disagree.
On this Christmas Eve Day, I would like to wish everyone on this forum, “A very Joyful Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.”
