Notwithstanding who is or is not to blame, I think it is time to demolish that eye sore of a prison and build a modern facility somewhere out of the heart of Georgetown. Maybe on the East Coast, with updated monitoring systems and state of the art training for the officers. IT IS TIME!!
I am not sure that the present location is all bad. It is right there – up in your face! As far as I can recall there was one violent event many years ago. A Prison Officer was killed. Then there was the previous image of Dr, Jagan. outside the Camp street entrance, one arm in a sling implying prison cruelty. Compare that with what may have gone on at HMPS on the Mazaruni river. “Eye nah see; heart nah bun”.
At one time the cells visible along D’urban street were numbered on the outside. This was because the occupants thereof would ‘cat call’ passers by; and the numbering was an effective deterrent to the practice. And for what it is worth, the formidable structure was pointed out by watchful parents to errant sons as a place in their future unless they mend their ways. The “Fomatory” (Suddie Boys’ School) was too remote to have the same effect.
And please! Do not ask how I know all this.
I agree with “demerwater” especially with regards to the deterrent effect due the visible presence of the structure. On the other hand local residents oftimes object to the location, fearing the possible consequence of escaping inmates….. however it is most likely that escapees (according to history) make haste to be as far away from their imprisoned home as possible
…and do you remember reading (or writing), “Do not steal this book, my dearest friend; or Georgetown jail will be your end ….”?
