Mighty Sparrow

Dr Slinger Francisco, the legendary Mighty Sparrow, or as he is fondly known “Birdie”, a West Indian calypso icon, celebrated his 81st birthday on Saturday, July 9. Sparrow was born in the fishing village of Grand Roy, Grenada, on July 9, 1935. He moved to Trinidad with his mother, his father having relocated there in 1937, and grew up in Port of Spain.

His musical accomplishments, particular in calypso, have ensured that the Mighty Sparrow will continue to have a long lasting legacy among fans of all ages. He has won multiple awards, many other significant university citations from governments and organizations too numerous to mention. He has achieved numerous recognitions and worldwide fame. His songs such as Jean and Dinah, May May, Sa Sa Yea, Unity, Melda O, Jail, Pay as You Earn ‘PAYE’, Age is Just a Number, Drunk and Disorderly, Wanted Dead or Alive, Human Rights, Sexy Marajhin, Capitalism Gone Mad, The Lizard, The More the Merrier, and countless others, are just some of his best known and best praised songs. His songs have put him in the spotlight and earned him worldwide recognition. He is still a prolific performer today, and shows no sign of stopping.

    The  Great Mighty Sparrow1

    Born Slinger Francisco, better known as The Mighty Sparrow Always smiling and singing sporting and with an infectious glow The Birdie is the unrivaled Calypso King of the World still singing With a career that spans more than over forty years and counting An artist par excellence in his rightful place leaving others to mourn By defeating every other competitors and pretenders to his throne He has entertained audiences across the the Caribbean and Africa Especially in North and South America, Europe and even in  Asia Sparrow’s roots were in Gran Roi, Grenada, a rural fishing village Born to a poor working class family but as it says in the old adage   You cannot keep a good man down whenever its said and done He migrated to his adopted homeland Trinidad at the age of one He attended the New Town Boys School where he was selected to sing In the boys’ choir of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church there he found his thing The harmonics of the Gregorian Chants and the Plainsongs of the church That were embedded in him would later affect the depth ending his search His vocal abilities also reflect his childhood role as the head choirboy Propelling him into musical compositions today for all of us to enjoy His influences include Nat Cole,Sarah Vaughn and Frankie Laine Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Kitchener, Melody and Billy Eckstein At the tender age of 20, Sparrow emerged even then to show he was fit With top position with his record breaking calypso Jean And Dinah hit In 1956 with Yankees Gone and in 1957 with Carnival Boycott He was the man with the top tune everywhere within earshot With many changes and improvements he became the kingpin Sparrow became the only calypsonian to have had a triple win In 1958 in that year’s Road March Competition Again in 1959 when he released Federation With Royal Jail and Ten to One its Murder his career soared Model Nation and Dan Is The Man In The Van followed In 1966, He won the Road Competition again with Melda In 1968  Sparrow was a hit again this time with Mr Walker With the sexy suggestive Congo Man he surpassed the best of the balladeers With Only A Fool Breaks His Own Heart and Byron Lee and the Dragonaires Always loving and becoming good citizens of his Trini nation In 1967 he advised the youth on the importance of Education He appealed to the people of the world to Love one Another and Lend A Hand Appealing to Trinidadians for unity the people listened and try to understand He climbed the ladder of success in song and rhyme Becoming the most popular calypsonian of all time His social commentaries demonstrated again that the real calypso Were the people’s eyes and ears coming from the songs of Sparrow In 1981 he registered his social/political commentaries With songs he embraced both the blacks and the coolies In  another linguistic inclusion embracing all East Indian With his first chutney contribution of Sexy Marajhin In 1982 he gave us Human Rights and also We Like It So Showing the mass that  the Mighty Sparrow was Mr Calypso In 1983 with Capitalism Gone Mad  you never get bored Adding  that title again to his 1983 Road March’s record In 1985 he proved to the youth in the business he has the answer That he can up to any level when necessary with Soca Pressure.
