If recent measures of public opinion hold, President Trump will enter office viewed unfavourably by 49 percent of Americans. 43 percent of Americans view him favourably. The deepest fears of his critics include the possibility of nuclear catastrophe. His most enthusiastic backers believe he’ll “make America great again.” Will either group prove able to judge the Trump Administration based on its performance in office rather than their prejudgments about the president’s fitness?

To discipline my own thinking, I’ve formulated markers that I will use to evaluate President Trump and the executive branch agencies that his appointees will soon lead.   Continue reading

What is past will certainly be prologue. It has all happened before and will happen again

What is past is prologue.

The Bard of Avon is quoted as saying, “What is past is prologue”.  In Act 2 Scene 1 of the Shakespearean play The Tempest, Antonio attempts to convince Sebastian to murder his sleeping father Alonso, King of Naples, so that Sebastian can become king. All that had taken place up until then- their past- was merely a prologue, to the great things to come if they carried out the deed. The past is of vital importance, as it defines the present and as a consequence sets the stage for the future. For Donald Trump the soon to be inaugurated 45th president of the United States, the stage has already been set,the future ill defined, with disastrous consequences looming on the horizon.   Continue reading

legal-logoPresident David Granger on Saturday announced the appointment of several lawyers and judges as Senior Counsel for the first time in 20 years. The last batch of Senior Counsel was appointed in 1996.

“His Excellency Brigadier David Granger, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, is pleased to appoint the following persons as Senior Counsel, learned in the law in Guyana, on account of their exemplary experience, erudition, excellence and diligence in the practice of the law, with effect from January 1, 2017,” the Ministry of the Presidency said in a statement.  Continue reading
