Over the past month, (January/February 2017) I have been accessing what is the most popular talking point by Guyanese here in Guyana. Certainly there is a tie with the actions of the new American President, Donald Trump, in the White House, and the actions of Guyanese who are for and against the recently installed Parking Meters in Georgetown.  “Hidden Figures,” the second feature (after “St. Vincent,” 2014) by Theodore Melfi, is a lesson in American history that’s intended for the whole family. It’s set in the most significant decade of U.S.A. history, in the second half of the 20th century – the 1960s. Other films that take place in that decade deal grimly with the blacks’ struggle for civil rights and equality.

By contrast, “Hidden Figures,” though not omitting any part of the ugly treatment meted out to the “coloured,” as they were then called, presents its true story almost as a fairy tale that inevitably leads to victory.  Continue reading

Speech by Stephen K. Bannon (Steve Bannon), Donald Trump’s senior strategic advisor and architect of his winning 2016 election. In this speech delivered in 1911 to the Liberty Restoration Foundation, Bannon laid out the political philosophy both he and Trump embraced, and which appealed to the American people in the election.  It is conservative, perhaps explaining why the political liberal left has resorted to evidently incorrect allegations of antisemitism or racism to try to derail his appointment.      Continue reading
