Two of my more recent articles focused on “World Poetry” and on “International Influential Women”. In the latter, I threw the spotlight on Carmen Jarvis, one of Guyana’s most high-achievers, as Headmistress of the Bishops’ High School, Girl Guides Leader, Secretary-General of UNESCO in Guyana and the author of a book on the History of the Bishops’ High School. Sadly, Ms Carmen Jarvis passed away just two weeks after my article was published. I now extend condolences to the Relatives, former students, and the colleagues of Ms Carmen Jarvis at the UNESCO.    Continue reading

Mrs. Carmen Jarvis is a legend. As Principal of Bishop’s High School she was one of the top leaders in education in Guyana. Her astute leadership, dedication to her profession and willingness o take on challenges won the admiration of all sections of Guyanese society and from the international community as well.

It is October 2016, and Mrs. Jarvis, at 92 years young, is active and is dispensing wit and wisdom to all that are interested; once she gets your attention it’s impossible to disengage yourself and like the mariner you become wiser ‘in the morrow morn.”

Rwanda and Syria—- Different Countries- Different Treatment

Twenty three years ago this day (April 7, 1994) the monstrous Rwandan genocide unfolded.  Instigated by the government of Rwanda, close to 1 million Rwandan Tutsis and their Hutu allies were murdered by right wing Hutu extremists in less than 90 days. To this day the scale and rapidity of the human genocide has defied human imagination. The horrific events of 1994 dramatized in the movie Hotel Rwanda were linked to both the externally imposed economic policies that Rwanda was forced to accept, as well as historic tensions that were rooted in colonialism.     Continue reading
