Female genital mutilation charge for Detroit doctor in US first

FGM charge for Detroit doctor Jumana Nagarwala in US first
  • 14 April 2017 – BBc News

A doctor in the US city of Detroit has been charged with carrying out female genital mutilation (FGM) on young girls in what is believed to be the first case of its kind in the country.

Prosecutors said Jumana Nagarwala had been performing the practice on girls aged between six and eight for 12 years.

She was investigated after the authorities received a tip-off. If found guilty, she faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

FGM was made illegal in the US in 1996.

Oh my goodness , this practice is so frigging primitive and what is it to do with hmm mm. . Mutilation of women vagina butchering it and sewing it up so that they can’t have sex or properly menstruate because the nasty toxic blood is building up in their bodies. I would of said that men invented this practice but there is a lot dirty minded women out there too. Shame on you woman you must have done it for money you piece of crap.

It is practiced in India and Africa. Parts get chopped off so that woman don’t enjoy the sex and stop them from straying. People who have it can’t urinate or poo properly and are in excruciating pain most of the time. Very degrading and it’s normally women who do the eye watering butchering

Dr nagarwala looks rotten. I hope she gets locked up for good and her vagina cut off. Disgusting woman

      • Richinds  On April 17, 2017 at 5:07 pm

Yours is precisely the reason they do it.
Additionally, here in the US,the other reasons are cross breeding amoung the young and the need for scholarly ahievements requiring singular focus.

At the end of the day it is down to the ignorant immigrant who has brought their backward ways to these countries. They want their children mutilated / circumcised/ sewn up to prevent them having sex. From the photo nagarwala looks backward herself and should know better. I hope she gets her shriveled up vagina mutilated and hacked off

These Bastards left their homeland where they practice these Babaric things come to our land and expect us yo adapt their customs. When foreignets enter their counyry they are compelled to follow their customs or face their style of justice. What makes them exempt from ours. Send het add to jail.

Looking at some of the comments it seems many have just heard of this practice; yet it is widespread such that 200 million estimated to have had it done (In fact it is one reason why I sent the article to Cyril for publication – to publicize this cruel practice. Thx Cyril!). Note this in the article: “In 2012 the US authorities said more than 500,000 women and girls in the country had either been subjected to FGM or were at risk of it.” As well, another report talks of 150,000 in UK at risk.

I also noticed that Destiny child implicates India as the main offender aside from Africa. Well, while the doctor has an Indian sounding name she is Muslim (notice the hijab); and that is significant. Other than Africans, Muslims practice the cutting widely. Here is Mid East Forum article dealing with the subject of widespread practice in the Islamic world. http://www.meforum.org/1629/is-female-genital-mutilation-an-islamic-problem

In India, Muslims are given special dispensation to carryout their religious-based beliefs and practices, for fear of being cited for Islamophobia, and avoiding riots. Plus, politicians give in to them for ‘vote banking’. For example, a Muslim man can divorce his wife by repeating “Talaq” 3x. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/oct/20/talaq-and-the-battle-to-ban-the-three-words-that-grant-indias-muslim-men-instant-divorce. And their female marriage laws are lower than Hindus’

Furthermore, this doctor is from a Shia Ismaili sect which apparently carries out the practice. “Smith says Nagarwala is a member of the Dawoodi Bohra community, a Muslim sect concentrated mostly in India. The group has a mosque in suburban Detroit.” http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/windsor/detroit-doctor-denies-genital-mutilation-judge-keeps-her-locked-up-1.4073084

Regarding Africans, I saw a chic-looking African (Nigerian I think) young woman on BBC a few months ago staunchly debating with the host and promoting the practice (I think in the US). Her argument was that it leads to better hygiene and is more “aesthetic” looking. Apparently, there are about four different FGM procedures so she was promoting a particular version.

“Looking at some of the comments it seems many have just heard of this practice.”

Not necessarily, sir. It does not matter whether this outrageous, primitive act is known. well-known or not, it is intrinsically wrong and must be stamped out where is practiced.

“Whenever something strikes you as very strange or funny, look for the hidden truth!” One of the best bits of advice I received from an esteemed mentor.
FGM jars my rather Victorian upbringing; so I looked it up. Note my reluctance to say ‘researched’! That term is reserved, almost with reverence, in the recesses of my mind..
    https://www.seeker.com/how-did-female-genital-mutilation-begin-1766105357.html
In my years as a student of Agriculture, I learned how to (very cautiously) attempt to determine genotype from observing the phenotype; and determine whether a male calf is destined for the breeding paddock or the slaughter house.
I read how the vaginas of Arabian mares were sewn up to prevent the inadvertent mating with stallions of another (and contaminative!) breed.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabian_horse
I have given only cursory attention to the human preoccupation with AKC; but I am quite sure that the idea is beneficial to both dogs and humans. Here I might interject the sad one liner about the mule / hinny. “No pride of ancestry; no hope of posterity”.
    http://www.metafilter.com/91087/A-mule-has-neither-pride-of-ancestry-nor-hope-of-posterity
I regard with great skepticism the various websites that promise to trace my ancestry to ‘Siraj ud Daulah’; or ‘Surajah Dowlah’. (Satire!)
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siraj_ud-Daulah
Then there was my mother’s elder brother – Sam Pandit from Leguan – who willingly engaged me in ‘debates’ – Hinduism vs. Catholicism. I do miss him!
I once asked him why do “Indians” go to such great lengths to find a marriageable boy or girl, in their match-making. He himself had recently found a ‘suitable girl’, in Mahaicony, for his eldest son, born and bred in Leguan!
(NB “A Suitable Boy” by Vickram Seth was enlightening and enjoyable reading for me.)
His explanation was simple – even scientific! “It is possible that the ‘jahaaj’ that brought me to where I am, may have brought a blood relative who might now be living at Bagatelle (3 miles from Louisiana, both in Leguan). “I cannot take the chance of an incestuous marriage!”
Finally, lest it be lost in the verbiage, I cannot accept (male or female) genital mutilation as a “civilized” tradition or practice.
    It is abhorrent!

  • demerwater  On April 21, 2017 at 3:56 am

I forgot to add, to my previous post, that the birth certificate of my father stated that HIS father was an “East Indian Immigrant” from Calcutta.
Years later, I learned that ‘Calcutta’ was the departure point of the “Jahaaj”; and was no evidence of the birthplace of my paternal ancestor.

I would think that women who go to clinics have their vagina hacked off to make it look pleasing on the eye are probably porn actress who make porn film!

      • Micky  On April 21, 2017 at 3:49 pm

Oh my days who gets their genitals trimmed for cosmetic reasons. Havent these people got better things to do with their money . Its not like their genitals are on show
Unless they are making nude movies

The Indian (Hindu) system to avoid incest is called ‘Gotra’ (translated as clan). It is exogamous. Originally (according to Hindu mythology) there were 7 or 8 ‘mind-born of the creator Brahma’ rishis from whom the human race originated. This cosmological system is involved and I won’t get into it here.

The point is, as very often in Hindu practice, there is a logic or science underpinning the practice ( as I often use a computer metaphor: Hinduism is not WYSIWYG). It is difficult to trace the original clan so some Hindus follow a system where they look back about 8 generations, so as to minimize/avoid incest.

Clearly, Hindus were aware of the health dangers of incest so they go to lengths to avoid such marriages.

I mentioned Hindu-Indian (as I did in the earlier posting) to contrast to Muslims, who often marry cousins.

Finally, the male-cutting or circumcision is, to my mind, practiced where water for washing was not always accessible as in the desert areas of the Mid-East. Why this would be framed as a covenant between God and his ‘chosen people’ is unclear because it implies God didn’t do a good job originally in creating the male. Today, some see it as another attempt to improve on Nature.

People who say that female circumcision is better because it is hygienic are talking a load of rubbish because the vagina is self cleaning

People inter marry so that they can keep the money within their family that is why they marry their cousins.

Doctor now admits to the practice ( as religious requirement) and another doctor (who own the clinic) is also charged.

Sounds good to me! You do not hear about people taking their children to the clinic to have their willy cut off for religious reasons.
