Barbara Atherly – Touching Lives in a Positive Way!

When Barbara Atherly left Guyana for Afghanistan little did she realize that she would make a tremendous difference in the lives of ordinary people.

Barbara’s mission with UNICEF was to improve literacy among the population, especially young women. It was a difficult mission in a war-torn country but Barbara used her people’s skills to cut across the barriers; she was pleased to see that literacy had begun to improve among girls.    

In 2004 Barbara was posted to Nepal. She was based in Kathmandu and again she focused on girl’s education. She worked in the regional office to help formalize a program for women. It took the form of a Conference and Barbara was in charge of finding the speakers and facilitators. The Conference was a great success.
