Today is the birthday of the land of the free
Beautiful America, where everyone wants to me
I salute this great land of hope with starry eyes
I give thanks to America on this Fourth of July

I thank the veterans for keeping her safe and proud
God bless the USA, today and every day I say out loud
For the road only goes one way to America’s shore
It’s true today and tomorrow like it was in the days yore

America, for my children and generations to be born
Land of precious opportunity in the shining morn
Bless the star- spangle banner and forever it may wave
Bless this dear land of the free and home of the brave.

Angela Merkel no longer considers America a friend, election material reveals

Mr Trump has repeatedly criticised the German Chancellor

Andrew Buncombe – New York | Independent UK

German leader Angela Merkel no longer considers the USA a friend, according to her party’s campaign material produced ahead of a September election.

The German Chancellor has had an often-tense relationship with President Donald Trump since he took office in January.

Earlier this year, after Mr Trump said he would pull the US out of the Paris Accord and following the UK’s vote to leave the EU, she said European countries could no longer rely on their traditional allies.

Now Ms Merkel appears to have demoted the USA in election material prepared jointly by her Christian Democratic Union (CDU), and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU).

According to Reuters, four years ago, their election material referred to the United States of America as Germany’s “most important friend” outside of Europe. The 2013 programme also described the friendship with Washington as a “cornerstone” of Germany’s international relations.

But the news agency said the words “friend” and “friendship” were missing from the latest election programme, entitled “For a Germany in which we live well and happily”.

Rather, the programme now calls the USA, Germany’s “most important partner” outside of Europe.

After talks with Mr Trump at the G7 summit in Italy in May, Ms Merkel described the discussions with the US President on climate change as “unsatisfying”.

Last week, she told Germany’s parliament she was ready to confront Mr Trump again on the topic at the upcoming Group of 20 summit in Germany.

Mr Trump frequently criticised Ms Merkel during the presidential campaign last year, attacking her immigration policy as “insane”.

He has also repeatedly denounced Germany’s trade surplus with the United States and accused Berlin and other European partners of owing “massive amounts of money” to NATO.

A survey by the Pew Research Centre last week showed just 35 per cent of Germans had a favourable view of the USA, down from 57 per cent at the end of President Barack Obama’s term.

Well, the four-day long celebration (in true West Indian style) is over; and the “morning after” includes a thought that won’t go away.
One idea that is still swirling in my mind concerns patriotism. During the discussions / arguments I recklessly quoted Sam Chase & Jack Mello “So if a cat gives birth to a litter in an oven would you call the kittens bread?” I was accused of being ungrateful – a very bad word in my extended family.
Was I ungrateful? Certainly! “Breathes there a man so dead ….” and all that.
But the Land in which I was born was not the same Land that I left in 1982.
And the Land to which I emigrated in 1982, is not the same Land in which I am living now.
The latitude and longitude coordinates are the same.
I do not feel the same embrace.
    In 1986 I wrote The Alien’s Thanksgiving.

    “I give thanks for the right to grow old;
Because I know how cheaply a life can be sold.
    I give thanks for Liberty and Justice;
Because I’ve lived where there’s no “Checks and Balances”.
Thank Heaven I can follow my own chosen star,
And not have to bow to dictator or czar!!!
Thank God for America and all her bounty.
Because I’ve lived in another country.”

I cherish the concept of ‘checks and balances’; and my fear is that it is being actively eroded – by consent (silence!) of the governed.
