Venezuela: Let’s Discuss Nicolás’ Five Years of Epic Victories

Let’s Discuss Nicolás’ Five Years of Epic Victories

By Carlos Hernández | Caracas Chronicles

Nicolás Maduro

It’s been 5 years already since the glorious victory of our Commander in Chief Nicolás Maduro and, you know me — I’d normally insult that human rights abuser like I invented it, but Tamara’s article about the Law Against Hate victims gave me goosebumps. So today, for me, it’s all about love.

One of the biggest achievements of the past five years has been the strike against the bourgeoisie: According to the Doing Business report of the World Bank, in 2013, Venezuela ranked 180/185, the 6th worst economy to do business in. This year we reached the 188/190 place.     Continue reading

Celebrating 180th Anniversary of Indian Arrivals Day in Guyana

Celebrating 180th Anniversary of Indian Arrivals Day in Guyana

By Vidur Dindayal

It is truly wonderful that we are celebrating Indian Arrivals Day. We say thanksgiving prayers to our forbears who suffered and toiled to make a good life for themselves and for us who follow them. We thank them for clearing the path and building a home for us to live and prosper in Guyana, in the new world, far away from mother India.

180 years ago our ancestors first set foot in Guyana. The first batch, 249 in all, sailed from India in the SS Whitby on 13 January 1838 and arrived in Guyana on 5 May 1838 after a voyage of 112 days. The first landings were 164 passengers at Highbury, East Bank Berbice. The SS Hesperus with 165 on board sailed from Calcutta on 29 January 1838 and arrived in Guyana on the night of 5 May 1838.       Continue reading

Today is Earth Day 2018. The theme this year is End Plastic Pollution in response to the exponential growth of plastic waste that now poses a threat to human survival owing to its un-biodegradable nature. When exposed to water, sun, or other elements, our plastic waste breaks down into tiny particles invisible to the naked eye. These particles – called microplastics – now contaminate our drinking water, seafood, or even the salt we add to our meals.

Earth Day Network (EDN) sums up the scope of this threat with the following 10 facts of plastic in our oceans.

COPENHAGEN — The statue of the woman is nearly 23 feet tall. Her head is wrapped and she stares straight ahead while sitting barefoot, but regally, in a wide-backed chair, clutching a torch in one hand and a tool used to cut sugar cane in the other.

In Denmark, where most of the public statues represent white men, two artists on Saturday unveiled the striking statue that portrays a 19th-century rebel queen who led a fiery revolt against Danish colonial rule in the Caribbean.  It’s being billed as Denmark’s first public monument to a black woman.          Continue reading
