Women and Examples from Ghana — by Francis Quamina Farrier

On Friday March 6, the West African country of Ghana, celebrated its sixty third Independence Anniversary with pomp and ceremony. Last Sunday, countries around the world observed “International Women’s Day” with a range of activities. As such, I have decided to merge these two annual events in this Feature Article.

In more recent years Ghana has been focusing more on higher education for the young women of the country. The education of girls and young women is now increasing in tertiary education as never before. Last year (2019) the country observed “The Year of Return”, when Africans in the Diaspora, whether born in Africa or of African heritage, were encouraged to visit Ghana to mark the 400 anniversary of the commencement of the Atlantic Slave Trade of which Ghana was a participant both as victim and enabler.

Amidst the panic what message are we sending to the kids.

The news has been received—Yes, the coronavirus is here. Fear Not.

But mass panic is also here- FEAR.

As a health care professional for more than four decades, there is very little to which I have not been exposed in my profession – HIV, whooping cough, tuberculosis, shingles, measles, hepatitis, diphtheria. And with noteworthy exception of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Acute Syndrome), very little has left me feeling vulnerable, overwhelmed or straight-out scared.

In my commentaries, I have often mused the rest of the world will be half Chinese in the long run. With its fluid population of 1.4 billion people (1.386 as of 2017) out of 7 billion (7.53 as of 2017) in the rest of the universe, China can make a lot of mischief or it can help to solve most of this world’s problems.

With the Chinese Revolution brought about by Mao Ts Tong in 1946 followed by the corrections of Zhou En Lai and the reformer Deng Xiaoping with his practical mind and now the global leadership led by Xi JinPing through the Chinese Silk Road, China in the past seventy years and beyond will heavily influence what’s in happening in the rest of the world. The corona virus known through its scientific name of COVID19 that is sweeping all over the world is a vibrant example of the worst and the best coming from China.

As from today, there will be no more entries in Guyanese Online that relate to politics in Guyana, the USA, or any other country. Readers are encouraged to go elsewhere to the many news outlets available.

Readers would understand that the divisive nature of many political news items and commentaries will not help any country in these perilous times. It is now believed that the worldwide reactions to the Coronavirus pandemic will cause the meltdown in economies worldwide and these will be accompanied by social disruptions. This emergency will last for months and many countries, businesses and organizations will not recover.

From now on, therefore, this blog will concentrate with renewed focus on helping Guyanese Associations worldwide with their projects. This was the original reason for creating this website in February 2010.

Guyana Closes International Airports In Effort to Deal with Coronavirus

No flights will be allowed into Guyana, except for cargo flights, planes that have to make technical stops and special authorized flights.

(Caribbean360) – GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Tuesday March 17, 2020 – Guyana’s major ports of entry will be closed from midnight tomorrow as authorities try to stem the spread of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) which has resulted in one death in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nation.

Given the nature and characteristics of the novel coronavirus, a number of public entities in Guyana are implementing precautionary measures as the country slowly grinds to a halt.

A series of advisories disseminated to the media yesterday by several government agencies and privately own businesses provided information on the measures that will be undertaken as the nations strives to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, now known as COVID -19.

The new preventative measures have been listed in what seems to be a sequence of statements.

In normal times a sudden drop in the price of oil would elicit a collective sigh of relief among Caribbean governments and Central Bankers. However, these are not normal times.

The ill-judged decision by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia, to pump more oil at just the moment the global economy is reeling from the impact of the Corona virus, COVID-19, has created a global shock that will touch the Caribbean in ways that may suppress growth for years to come.

In essence, what the Saudi Prince decided to do, just as international markets were going into free fall and global demand for oil was in decline as a result of the Corona virus, was  to flood an oversupplied world energy market with 12.5m barrels a day of crude. His aim was to try to take market share away from OPEC rivals and particularly Russia which has little spare capacity to compete.
