For over 200 years Demerara was a Dutch colony, along with Essequibo and Berbice. They designed sturdy sea defences, and built a series of canals to drain the land after heavy rains. Their canal systems were inherited by the British after 1814 when the Dutch colonies were ceded to Britain creating British Guiana. However, over the last 200 years, many of the canals were filled in to make roads or are not properly maintained to ensure optimum drainage.
Today, very few canals remain in the Greater Georgetown area where in the past there were many. Sluices or kokers controlled the outflow of water from these canals to outlets on the Demerara River. However, it is reported that the few sluices that remain are not properly maintained and are usually blocked with debris. Pumps have been deployed, but they cannot handle the volume of water when there is heavy rainfall. The blame game goes on, but a solution to drainage has to be found or Georgetown will continue to suffer floods on a regular basis.

Saw this earlier today, the silly bastards will drown until they spend some time and money to solve the problem. Advice to them as always is to get help from the Dutch or move the capital further up the East Bank. Until they do something soon they had better all learn how to deal with water like the fishes do….grow gills and learn to swim long distances.
There is too much money, legal and drugs, that are invested in future condos and hotels to move the capital to higher ground. There are dozens of more ten to twenty storey towers to be build on the coast line. “PRIME REAL ESTATE”
Crops like rice and sugar cane do not grow as well in the red soil or hilly sand and clay area. They don’t even like to eat pine, much less live in Region 10. They will bring up the past CIA interventions in the 1950s to justify their stubbornness.
I thought we were moving away from rice and sugar so no need to plant them farther inland. What about the re enable energy industry, even with the oil we still need that. Al, those who approved the plans for 10 and 20 story buildings on the foreshore should be removed to their jobs. Don’t they know about sea level rise and climate change? All the nEw hotels near the sea wall will be under water in the near future.

I don’t see or hear the Guyanese Diaspora shouting racism or dictatorship when America or Canada offshores jobs to poorer countries. Those countries are changing from industrial to a knowledge based economy. Many Guyanese are going to be left behind once AI takes over. They might end up homeless or they return shame face when they come back with no money and a broken spirit.
Funny thing is many are ready to criticize and “high light” i.e another form of criticism, yet they were not ready to put in the work and energy to help.
2005 there was 46 inches of rainfall in 3 days worst flood on the coast. Together many Guyanese were stronger not political not racial not high lighting but being together.
I remember the pot of chicken curry on Annandale public road warm food for the guys on boats trying to get food and medicine to people in the areas off the road. Pradoville Ogle with more than 60 inches submerged and the smile of relief from each other .
I remember bare foot on main and Carmichael Street as a school boy and the excitement of faster moving cars which we laughed as speed boats and the bottom wash of my car when I was older.
Kudos to those managing this rain fall and making it better for Guyanese , and kudos to the info mongers that want to spread uneasiness to us a few Guyanese that forgot we live in a tropical country and are becoming more concerned.
Hmm I hope NY, Tor, and Lon don’t get a snow storm or cold snap, the Diaspora may be doing bad things and evil governance to cause that.

First order of business. The Dutch are the best in the world with sea defense. Why/What is the Guyana Government waiting on? The Dutch built the system. Hire them please and save GUYANA and her people from the SEA!!!
