— PM who shot to fame at Cop26 climate talks vows to ‘lead country first to safety then to prosperity’

Mia Mottley, who shot to international fame during the Cop26 climate talks and oversaw Barbados’s Republican break with the Queen last year, has won a second term as the Caribbean nation’s prime minister.

The 56-year-old’s Barbados Labour Party (BLP) won all 30 seats, repeating the historic 30-0 win in 2018, in an election marred by complaints that thousands of Covid-positive Bajans were denied a vote.

He’s working so hard to make the world sustainable, life multi planetary, people in remote areas have access to internet, those with major injuries walk and think again, and to remove the traffic congestion from the freeways. So many people put him down for being a “billionaire” but wouldn’t know what to do with all his billions if he donated the entire amount to taxes.

GUYANA: Education: Guyanese students top Caribbean at CSEC and CAPE Exams

Guyanese students have topped the Caribbean at both the CSEC and CAPE levels, based on information from the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC).

At the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) level, Samuel Haynes from Queen’s College has been awarded for ‘Overall Outstanding Achievement’.  Haynes scored nine Grade One passes at the 2021 CAPE sitting

Additionally, at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) level, Guyana also scored the top spot with Zaynab Shaffie from Queen’s College awarded ‘Overall Outstanding Achievement’. She scored 18 Grade Ones and two Grade Twos.       

GUYANA: Laparkan fire reportedly started where dangerous oil chemicals were stored

The popular Laparkan Shipping Company storage bond and the storage bond of another shipping company identified as Tropical Shipping Company were destroyed by a massive inferno, which started just before midnight on Sunday.

The bonds are located on the premises of the Guyana National Shipping Corporation (GNIC) Wharf at Lombard and Broad Streets, Charlestown, Georgetown.

According to reports, hundreds of millions of dollars worth in vehicles and other imported items which were stored in containers, barrels and boxes were completely destroyed by the blaze.

We’re in a new world of work, according to BlackRock CEO Larry Fink — and he says that’s a good thing.

In his annual letter to CEOs, Fink touched on everything he thought was “vital to driving durable long-term returns” and helping the company’s clients reach their goals. One trend he highlighted was the record-breaking number of workers quitting.

It was a warm dry day in October when I visited Bachelors Adventure on the East Coast of Demerara. With me, just a few steps from the public road, was the poet and social worker Ras Blackman, who grew up in the village and was kindly giving me a tour.

On 20 August 1823, more than 4,000 enslaved women and men had gathered here, Ras told me, in what had been a cotton field. On the other side of the public road were assembled 200 members of the British militia, each carrying a rifle. I was suddenly overtaken by a sense of awe. Awe at the courage of the enslaved people. Awe at their remarkable organisational skills. Awe at the profound legacy of freedom they had left behind, including for me, a White person. 

GUYANA: Georgetown: First phase of Vlissengen Road Project completed

Phase one of the geometric improvement project along Vlissengen Road has been completed. The G$42.6 million project is aimed at improving access for pedestrians.

The first phase of the project runs from the roundabout to Barr Street and was executed by Vieira 66 Logistics. The area has been paved, has adequate drainage, is painted and outfitted with street lights.

The second phase of the project which will continue from Barr Street and end at Lamaha Street is still in the design phase. This phase will also see the installation of seats from the roundabout to Lamaha Street.       

GUYANA: President Ali to hold discussions with Presidents Bolsonaro and Santokhi

His Excellency President of Guyana Dr. Irfaan Ali is scheduled to make a working visit to Paramaribo on Thursday January 20, 2022 to meet with the President of the Republic of Suriname, H.E Chandrikapersad Santokhi, and the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, H.E Jair Bolsonaro.

The leaders are expected to discuss the formation of an energy corridor, oil and gas and other natural resources opportunities, among areas of common interest.

On Friday January 21, President Bolsonaro and a team of officials are expected to travel to Georgetown for a one-day official visit with President Ali and his team of Ministers.
