While I don’t profess to know the origins of it, I have been aware, going back to my short pants days growing up in West Dem, of my fascination with words, whether in the subjects being taught in high school at St. Stanislaus or, in later years, in the everyday conversations with folks here or across the region, ranging from Cayman in the northwest Caribbean to my homeland here.  The influence is there, clear as day, in many of the songs I wrote, drawing on the lexicons of these various destinations I came to know from my musical visits.

It remains for me a repository of information that fascinates and motivates me, both for the specificity of the languages but also for the ingenuity of the people who created it. One should also emphasise, however, that this variety in Caribbean native expressions is only evident because of our geographical separations after we travel the region and come face to face with the differences.     

GUYANA: Airports open to commercial flights from October 12. 2020; COVID-19 deaths now 82

The PPP/C government this afternoon confirmed that the two international airports will reopen to commercial flights on October 12th.

Current COVID-19 measures restricting travel will continue until October 12th when new directives are scheduled to be announced as government is currently in discussions with stakeholders to prepare for on-arrival testing for the virus and other measures for a swift reopening to scheduled commercial travel. Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill, who is responsible for the aviation sector, today told Stabroek News.

“We want the airports opened as soon as is practical, ensuring compliance with the international guidelines set out by the Pan American Health Organization, WHO and international guidelines. We will follow all the protocols,”

The documentary profiles and captures the way to look at this region – both physical, political, economic, cultural, and human.

It is always a good time to reiterate Guyana’s food traditions, practices, and prospects, and to emphasize the power and potential of good food in general. Just as food does amazing things at the table, it could be a source of national unity through development of a thoughtful and positive national food culture. In fact, there is a contemporary cuisine scene unfolding in Guyana, with great potential for our food security, health, economic enterprise and yes even national pride and unity.

There are global calls, if not cries, for more thoughtful and sustainable food systems which demand leadership from agriculturally rich and culturally dynamic places like Guyana.  And with projected oil wealth, and good governance, Guyana could lead and model modern sustainable food practices.

Guyana’s popular chef, Delven Adams, proprietor of Georgetown’s Backyard Cafe, will debuted his unique traditional cuisine on Sunday, July 5, on the second season of the National Geographic TV series Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted. The episode was aired on NatGo on Sunday, July 5 at 10 pm, 9 Central.

The charismatic Adams, a remigrant, whose culinary tours have mesmerized foodies, and attracted tourists from around the world, told Caribbean Life in an exclusive interview via Facebook, that the National Geographic episode is more about showcasing Guyana.
