BUSINESS: Work from home trend is killing downtown Toronto. Experts say it could get worse

More than a year-and-a-half into this pandemic, I can honestly say that I don’t miss jamming myself onto a packed streetcar in downtown Toronto every morning.

But I do miss Soup Nutsy, CJ Lunchbox, Green Box, Little India and the underground network of PATH shops I used to frequent for last-minute gifts and replacement mittens.

Hopefully, these businesses will be right where we left them back in March of 2020, when COVID-19 hit and sent everybody running from their offices for the safety of their homes. But it is unlikely.

GUYANA: Persons without FDA-approved jabs can now access approved COVID-19 vaccine – US CDC

Government’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign using the Russian Sputnik V vaccine has not been approved by the WHO or the FDA.

Sep 21, 2021- Kaieteur News – In its most recent recommendations, the United States’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that “people who received all or some of the recommended doses of a COVID-19 vaccine not listed for emergency use by WHO (World Health Organisation) and not authorised by FDA (US. Food and Drugs Administration) may be offered a complete FDA authorised COVID-19 vaccine series.”

The recommendation also states that persons should wait at least 28 days after being administered the last dose of the non-authorised vaccine before being administered the FDA-authorised vaccine.  (Note – The Russian Sputnik V Vaccine is a non-authorized vaccine. It has been the most widely distributed vaccine in Guyana, purchased by the Government for millions of US dollars)

Sep 17, 2021 – Kaieteur News – Residents of Bonfim – a small town located in Brazil just opposite the Takutu River from Lethem, Guyana – have been protesting over the last two days against what they are calling an unfair practice by the Guyanese authorities at the Lethem/Brazil border crossing. Trucks with supplies bound for Lethem stuck at the road block set up by Brazilian protestors.

They have blocked the main highway leading to the Takutu Bridge, preventing the trucks laden with basic supplies from entering Lethem.

September 17, 2021 –   Trinidad Guardian) The ongoing furore of United States rapper Nicki Minaj’s claim that a COVID-19 vaccine caused impotence in a Trinidadian man took centre stage on the Daily Show with Trevor Noah last night, featuring CNC3’s Jason Williams and Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh..

The popular infotainment show, aired a clip of Williams as he hosted The Morning Brew, commenting on Nicki’s claims. Noah then interviewed Minister Deyalsingh and ended with a glowing tribute to the people of Trinidad and Tobago and the culture of the nation, and gave well wishes to the entire country for having to go through this international controversy.

Sep 12, 2021 –  Kaieteur News – In recognition of the oftentimes irreversible effects of methylmercury, the Government of Guyana, almost eight years ago, signed onto and ratified the Minamata Convention. That international treaty is designed to protect human life as well as the environment from the release of methylmercury and its compounds during gold mining activities.

In fact, the PPP/C and APNU+AFC had made pledges and implemented several initiatives since 2013 to phase out the use of methylmercury, one of the most toxic forms of mercury that is used in the gold sector particularly by artisanal and small miners. In spite of their best efforts to mitigate the effects or impacts of this chemical on human life and the environment, studies over the years have uncovered alarming levels of mercury poisoning/contamination in Indigenous people and their environs which are in proximity to mining camps that make use of the harmful chemical.

Being alive in 2021 is a test of strength and courage, but it is also a time of awakening. It is a time when people have risen from isolation and torment and have chosen to be lights in this world. They have chosen to not be victims of fear.

The conflicts between the vaccinated and unvaccinated continue and many have not chosen sides. They have not chosen to mock the choices either side have made. They realize that divide and conquer continues to cause nations to collapse and they have chosen to be the voices of reason and stand in support of free will, truth, justice, and righteousness.

Throughout the pandemic, healthcare workers have worked tirelessly. Months ago, there were reports that in some instances they did not have enough personal protective equipment, but they persevered because they were committed, and we were and are still facing a health crisis. For many, when death was imminent, it was doctors and nurses who stood by them in their last moments when their relatives and friends could not be there.             

TRAVEL: Caribbean tourism recovery punctured by new coronavirus spike

KINGSTON (Reuters) – The Caribbean is one of the regions most dependent on tourism, with nine countries in the world’s top 20, according to an index compiled by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Just as tourism was beginning to show signs of recovery, the Caribbean has been hit by a new wave of coronavirus infections that is causing lockdowns and flight cancellations and overwhelming hospitals.

Countries including Jamaica, Martinique, The Bahamas, Barbados, St. Lucia, and Dominica have seen a rise in cases fueled by the highly contagious Delta variant and a relaxation of earlier restrictions. Misinformation spread on social media has also contributed to a low vaccine uptake.
