GUYANA: Hydro Project: Government’s GPL liable when Amaila Falls runs dry — Winston Brassington

The Amaila Falls during one of its dry spells in 2013

The Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) in addition to agreeing to purchase all of the power to be delivered to Georgetown from the 156 megawatt (MW) Amaila Falls Hydro Electric Plant has also agreed to assume the hydrological risks involved in the project.

As such, it would mean that GPL would bear the incurred liability whenever the Amaila Falls runs dry or if the 23 square kilometres reservoir is unable to feed the hydro plant.

This is according to Project Head, Winston Brassington, when he provided an update on the project for stakeholders at the recently concluded Energy Conference and Expo, venued at the Marriott Hotel in Kingston.

Addressing the conference, Brassington told those in attendance, “like any large projects there is a lot of risk in these projects but most of these risk have been put to the developer.”            Continue reading

By OilNOW – February 11, 2022
ExxonMobil today said it started production at Guyana’s second offshore oil development on the Stabroek Block, Liza Phase 2, bringing total production capacity to more than 340,000 barrels per day in only seven years since the country’s first discovery.

Production at the Liza Unity floating, production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel is expected to reach its target of 220,000 barrels of oil later this year, as operations continue to be brought safely online. It adds to the more than 120,000 barrels per day of capacity at the Liza Destiny FPSO, which began production in December 2019 and is now delivering at better than design capacity. The Stabroek Block’s recoverable resource base is currently estimated at more than 10 billion oil-equivalent barrels.              Continue reading

Archaeology: Africa’s heritage is humanity’s – and it’s been overlooked for too long

As an archaeologist, I am hoping my new project will connect the continent’s people to the hidden history of their land

My teacher and classmates were lovely, yet I still had this feeling of “What am I, a Somali refugee, doing here?” Furthermore, I had never even seen an archaeologist before, or held an archaeological object. But I had read a sentence in a book (Africa: history of a continent, by Basil Davidson) which said that to write African history we need to do archaeological research.          Continue reading

‘Tesla as the World’s Biggest Robot Company:’ Elon Musk on AI and U.S. Innovation | WSJ

Wall Street Journal Interview- December 6, 2021

Watch Tesla CEO Elon Musk in an interview with WSJ’s Joanna Stern at the CEO Council Summit.

COMMENT from Corbin Williams: — If something ever happens to this man the world will miss him dearly. He’s working so hard to make the world sustainable, life multi planetary, people in remote areas have access to internet, those with major injuries walk and think again, and to remove the traffic congestion from the freeways. So many people put him down for being a “billionaire” but wouldn’t know what to do with all his billions if he donated the entire amount to taxes.

When Your Cars Name Describes You — Rex Havens – Dry Bar Comedy

You have a car that resembles the way you feel?

Some comments:

  • The kind of comedy that makes you stop and think, “I never thought of it like that.” Bravo! Encore!
  • Word play and puns are my favorite kind of humor. This guy’s got it
  • As someone who loves puns and is a car dork as it is, this is absolutely hysterical.

NOTE: In 2019, it was reported that the last time sugar production fell below 100,000 tonnes was in 1926, 94 years ago. In 2019, GuySuCo managed to produce some 92,246 tonnes of sugar to be sold on the local, regional and international markets. Behold the simple shipping container. It’s a large, steel box that can carry tens of thousands of pounds of cargo. It’s also stackable and designed to fit on ocean freight ships, trains, and even trucks. These containers have been an unnoticed cog in the world’s highly complex manufacturing network for decades. But not anymore.

Thanks to the pandemic, the shipping container is now at the center of the global supply chain crisis, which has interrupted the delivery of everything from medical supplies to holiday gifts. Because of widespread manufacturing delays and bottlenecks, there aren’t enough of these boxes in the right place and at the right time.            Continue reading
