CRICKET: Sharpened Knives Now Drawn And Pointed At West Indies’ Selections Panel

By Reds Perreira and Tony McWatt  September 20, 2021

(This column was originally published in the Stabroek News newspaper)

“Knives for Roger Harper and his hallucinating band of selectors, aren’t yet drawn. But surely, they are being sharpened!”

Those were the words of the seasoned Jamaican cricket journalist Ray Ford, in reaction to the storm of controversy that has been created as a result of the choices made by Selections’ Chair Roger Harper and his Panel for the West Indies official squad of 15 plus four reserves to participate in the forthcoming ICC 2021 T20 World Cup. The 2021 ICC T20 World Cup will be held in the UAE from October 17 – November 13.        Continue reading

GUYANA: Biblical Reference: “Mark Of The Beast” Linked To COVID-19 Vaccines – By Mosa Telford

Some people have been linking the biblical references about a mark of the beast to COVID-19 vaccines. In this era where facts and misinformation are amalgamated, it can be difficult to differentiate truth from untruth? But do truth and untruth remain unchanged? Or do they change depending on the time and the people?

Global connectivity through the worldwide web has exposed us to a wealth of information. But we are constantly bombarded by the noise of the world and we must filter what we take in, for while information can enlighten us, it can also influence irresponsible behaviour and decisions.        Continue reading

Covid-19 – the political virus – EDITORIAL By Stabroek News

EDITORIAL By

Covid-19, the little virus from Wuhan, China has arguably had more of an impact on the modern world than World Wars I and II, the Great Depression and 9/11. It has resulted in the deaths of at a very minimum 4 million people and has brought political and economic systems to breaking point.

Diseases tend to do that: The Black Death, a bubonic plague, which swept through Eurasia between 1346 and 1353 killed an estimated 45% to 50% of the population. It scythed down so many rural labourers in England it caused severe labour and crop shortages. Tensions between landowners and the newly powerful workers (due to their scarcity) would eventually result in the Peasants Revolt of 1381 and the decline of the feudal system.          Continue reading

U.S.A — COVID deniers, anti-vaxers and mask rebels hurt not only themselves — Opinion

   By MOHAMED HAMALUDIN

They were not quite “bonfires of the vanities,” to borrow from the title of Tom Wolfe’s 1987 satirical novel. They were more like bonfires of the stupid – not the ignorant, just stupid.

Worldwide, four million people have died from the COVID-19 disease caused by the coronavirus and 196 million are infected. In the United States, 627,350 have died and 35.3 million are infected. In Florida, 38,700 have died and 2.5 million are infected – the third highest after California and Texas. In Miami-Dade County, 6,372 have died and 525,000 are infected. In Broward, 3,079 have died and 259,000 are infected. In Palm Beach, 2883 have died and 157,000 are infected.        Continue reading

Modern Sugar-Cane Growing and Harvesting – Sugar Mill Processing – in Australia

NOAL FARM – 6,649,156 views – since Oct 11, 2020

Sugarcane or sugar cane refer to several species and hybrids of tall perennial grasses, that are used for sugar production. The plants are two to six metres tall with stout, jointed, fibrous stalks that are rich in sucrose, which accumulates in the stalk internodes.

This video should give the Guyana Government, owner of the sugar estates, an idea of the competition in sugar production today. It is no longer a labour-intensive industry.

One of the consequences of the increased attention to British Guiana as a place to “try one’s luck” was a shortage of hotel and recreational facilities in Georgetown. The Demerara Ice House was opened in 1846 in response to this demand. This building at the corner of Brickdam and Water Street is said to have been designed by Maltese architect Caesar Castellani, who is also credited with the designs of many iconic local structures, including the “towers of the Brick Dam Police Station,” the Palms, and Castellani House, Guyana’s National Gallery of Art.            Continue reading

GUYANA: Gold Mining Impacts Entire Ecosystems – By Akola Thompson

   By

Guyana has had a long tortuous history with extractive industries. From the heydays of bauxite to the steady allure of a wealthy oil nation, the pursuit of these finite resources has resulted in environmental health and citizen wellbeing constantly being put on the backburner. While there are clear strategies to decrease the harm of gold mining on people and ecosystems, very little ever gets done.

Gold mining has brought with it the destruction of entire ecosystems, as large scale clearing of forests is regularly undertaken. In the wake of mining activities one can always find lifeless craters and dangerous open pits spanning for miles across several regions. The gold mining industry paints a really grim picture of the harm both regulated and illegal industries can have on entire communities.          Continue reading
