At the conclusion of the recent special summit in Trinidad, Caribbean Community (CARICOM) heads of government issued the ‘St Ann’s Declaration’. It set out in the dusty language of officialese the measures being taken to breathe life into the stalled CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).

However, far more interesting and accessible was a poorly reported but unusually detailed press conference held after the summit and available on YouTube. There, Barbados’ prime minister, Mia Mottley; Jamaica’s prime minister, Andrew Holness; Trinidad’s prime minister,Andrew Holness; and CARICOM’s secretary general, Irwin LaRocque, spelt out just how heads intend resuscitating the CSME, by when, and what could happen should they fail.          Continue reading

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Fri. Feb. 26, 2016: Jamaica’s People’s National Party and its first female Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller were last night handed a stunning defeat in Thursday’s general elections.

Despite predictions in many quarters that the PNP and Simpson-Miller were headed for another term, the opposition Jamaica Labour Party led by Andrew Holness, managed to take the win, claiming 33 of the 63 seats in the elections. The PNP only managed to secure win 30 seats, following a trend across the Caribbean that has only been bucked in recent elections in Belize.

It was also the first time ever that a political party had been voted out of office in Jamaica after only a single term.

As an aside, Andrew Holness’ defeat raised – though in an entirely different context – a matter that has also been the subject of much public discourse in Guyana, namely, the pension entitlement of an outgoing head of government.     read more

PNP delivers crushing 41-22 seat defeat to JLP

(Jamaica Observer) The People’s National Party (PNP) sent the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) back into Opposition after scoring a crushing 41-22-seat victory in yesterday’s 16th general election that pollsters and analysts had said was mostly too close to call.

A sober but triumphant Simpson Miller told jubilant supporters at PNP headquarters last night that she was thankful to the Jamaican people and Prime Minister Andrew Holness who, she said, called and congratulated her earlier. “He was very gracious.”

She urged comrades to greet supporters of the losing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) with love in an obvious extension of the olive branch after what was a vigorous and often bitter campaign. Continue reading
