Ramnaresh Sarwan with his man-of-the-match trophy

At 33, former West Indies and Guyana Captain Ramnaresh ‘Ronnie’ Sarwan seems to have found a new lease on life.

The elegant right-hander, who was recently married, started off the 2014 Regional NAGICO Super50 cricket tournament in Trinidad & Tobago with a scintillating unbeaten 89 from 62 balls with 10 fours and two sixes to spur Guyana to an emphatic 114-run win over Ireland at the Queens Park Oval on Friday night January 31, 2014.

He seems to be more settled mentally and more importantly a lot fitter now and the way he oozed confidence in his 49th 50-overs fifty suggested that he was almost back to Sarwan of old.  Continue reading

The rot in West Indies cricket – commentary

The rot in West Indies cricket

West Indies cricket team logoNOVEMBER 22, 2013 · By Stabroek News

The West Indies team were the most accommodating of guests in the two Test series in India to mark the retirement of Sachin Tendulkar, by allowing their hosts to dominate them as never before, losing twice by an innings and within three days. Apart from their gracious guard of honour to welcome the great man to the wicket, in what turned out to be his last Test innings, their pathetic display was the rudest possible farewell gift they could have given to a fellow professional and legend of the game; it was, moreover, an embarrassment to all followers of West Indies cricket, even when held up against the many embarrassments of the past 15 years or so.

In the first Test at Kolkata, only two West Indians appeared to be playing Test cricket, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Shane Shillingford; at Mumbai, they were belatedly joined by Denesh Ramdin. But, it has to be said, even Chanderpaul could not quite live up to his own lofty standards.          Continue reading

Chris Gayle - Man of the Match

Chris Gayle – Man of the Match

KINGSTON, Jamaica — An explosive 21st One-day International hundred from Chris Gayle followed up steady bowling led by Sunil Narine to propel West Indies to a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the Celkon Mobile Cup Series on Friday June 28.

All but 31 of Gayle’s 109 were boundaries, as West Indies successfully chased 209 for victory in the opening match of the three-nation series at Sabina Park.

Gayle treated scores of his compatriots to a typically destructive innings, catapulting West Indies over the finish line with 73 deliveries remaining and making him a shoo-in for the Man-of-the-Match award.
He reached his milestone from 89 balls, when he played a full length delivery from Lasith Malinga to mid-off and scampered a single.   Continue reading

West Indies survive Morgan blast

The Report by George Dobell-  September 27, 2012

West Indies 179 for 5 (Charles 84, Gayle 58) beat England 162 for 4 (Morgan 71*, Hales 68) by 15 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

A century opening stand between Chris Gayle and Johnson Charles powered West Indies to their first win of the 2012 World Twenty20 with a 16-run victory against England in their opening Super Eights match. Their top-order batsmen setting a daunting total of 179 for 5 and their quartet of slow bowlers suffocated the England batsmen as they started their reply.

A remarkable fourth-wicket stand of 107 in 58 balls between Alex Hales, who scored 68 from 51 balls, and Eoin Morgan, who made a brilliant, unbeaten 71 from 36 balls, gave England an outside chance of victory, but the pair were left too much to do by another lacklustre performance from their top-order colleagues.  [more]

Gayle, Narine star as WI sweep series

The Report by Abhishek Purohit  July 1, 2012

Dwayne Bravo – smashed 4 sixes in 11 balls

West Indies 177 for 5 (Gayle 53, Bravo 35*, McCullum 2-19) beat New Zealand 116 (Narine 4-12) by 61 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Chris Gayle provided the substance, yet again, Dwayne Bravo provided the late blast, and Sunil Narine ended New Zealand’s chase before it could even begin. West Indies completed their second big win over New Zealand to take the Florida and Twenty20 leg of the series 2-0. Already weakened by injuries to key players, including captain Ross Taylor, New Zealand had no answer to West Indies’ combination of power, explosiveness and intrigue.

Gayle threatened to cause as much damage as he had on Saturday before Nathan McCullum restricted him to 53, but Bravo’s burst ensured West Indies had another substantial total to defend. Continue reading

Gayle wants Windies to win for Caribbean-American fans

Stabroek editor – June 29, 2012  –  T20 Match versus New Zealand June 30 and Jul 1. 2012, at Central Broward Regional Park, Florida USA.

(WICB) Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Chris Gayle flashed his characteristic smile this morning as he embraced several West Indies fans at the Central Broward Regional Park. Gayle and the West Indies team had just arrived for training and as they got off the bus fans were on hand to “show some love” to the home players.

The strongly-built six-footer admitted that the atmosphere in south Florida reminded him of the pre-match hype back in the Caribbean. During his time in the batting cage, Gayle deposited a few balls into the stands and onto the grass mound to give supporters a taste of what they can expect this weekend. ST JOHN’S, Antigua — Chris Gayle’s 14-month exile from the West Indies team has ended with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) picking him for the ODI series against England.

The WICB and Gayle parted ways after last year’s World Cup, when he gave an explosive radio interview sharply criticising the WICB and blaming coach Ottis Gibson for undermining the confidence of senior players.

The WICB continued to exclude a batsman with two Test triple tons, demanding he apologise or withdraw his comments.      Continue reading
