LETTER FROM THE GUEST EDITOR – Vibert Cambridge
In this edition of our on-line magazine, the Guyana Cultural Association of New York, Inc. shines the spotlight on Guyanese musical creativity and music in Guyana. We have done this regularly over the past decade as we carried out our mission to “preserve, promote, and propagate” Guyana’s rich cultural heritage.
We have organized symposia (for example, Celebrating our Music Heritage in 2003; Celebrating Guyanese Dance, 2005,), published a well received newspaper series (“Celebrating our Creative Personalities” in Sunday Stabroek 2003-2006), issued in 2003 Music Orchids for You: Is We Ting—a compilation CD of iconic Guyanese music, published a collection of essays (Writings on Guyanese Music 2003 – 2004 published by the Department of African American Studies, Ohio University, 2005), and encouraged and supported original ethno-music research by Dr. Gillian Richards-Greaves and Rohan Sagar on Kwe Kwe, Banshikili and other Guyanese musical traditions. We continue this work in this edition. Continue reading

It is hard to believe that another year has gone by, in the blink of an eye. Christmas is here again, and as we know, this season is one of the most exciting times of the year.
Christmas is a time to feel a spirit of happiness. But most importantly, it is a time to connect and feel especially close and thankful for familyand friends.
Many may argue, despite the lighting of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, and the colorful fairy lights that adorn houses everywhere, Christmas in America can in no way compare to the wholehearted feeling we experienced back home, especially on Christmas Eve. My extended family who lived in one big house got together to polish the floor, hang the curtains, and as we use to say, put up the Christmas tree. Continue reading

I always feel a sense of excitement at this time of year. First, comes Thanksgiving, which brings Black Friday, and not very far behind, arrives the festive season of Christmas.
This is also the time when we begin to plan, with the hope of producing another exciting Folk Festival season. Our 2012 theme: Masquerade Lives! – will capture the history, vibrancy and colorful spectacle of this art form that continues to mesmerize and fill Guyanese with cheer at Christmastime.
