Guyana Politics: PPP “likely” to win next elections but tighter anti-corruption efforts needed- US expert

The United States (US) will have to ensure that the opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) sticks to its promises to keep a lid on corruption, with the likelihood of that party winning next year’s general elections, a Senior Advisor at U.S. State Department says in a recent assessment of the political and security situation.

“At the same time, given concerns regarding corruption in prior PPP administrations, while the US should embrace and work in good faith with a future PPP government, it must do so with its eyes open, holding the PPP to account with respect to its commitments to transparency, democracy, and commitment to free market and the rule of law,” Dr. Robert Evan Ellis states in his contribution titled “Security Challenges in Guyana and the Government Response” in Journal of the Americas.

Reopening shuttered sugar estates would require hefty funding and time to transform them from their current states to financial profitability, says Change Guyana presidential candidate Robert Badal who warned voters to be wary of grandiose promises from politicians.

Taking a direct jab at the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), which has promised and has stated in its manifesto that it would reopen three of the four shuttered sugar estates, rehire laid off sugar workers and bring the factories into profitability, Badal labelled the promises “foolishness” and “lies”.

“From my business experience, that is impractical. And I would say, without any apology, they are trying to lie to the people, lie to the people again. You cannot close that sugar estate and after a year reopen that sugar estate. It is impossible!” he contended.

The seven-member Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) is discussing the possibility of removing the names of at least 20,000 persons from the National Register of Registrants (NRR) because they have not uplifted their national identification (ID) cards over the years, and also ticking off the names of thousands of others who were previously registered as part of a heightened vigilance.

However, the opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) says if the commission by a majority vote decides to go ahead with doing so, the matter is likely to go to court.

The opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) on Thursday virtually endorsed the Working People’s Alliance’s (WPA) proposal of direct cash transfer of some projected oil revenues, but preferring to target the poor and needy instead of all just over 200,000 households across Guyana.

“In fact, in our manifesto, we are going to be talking about conditional transfers, targeted transfers to vulnerable groups right at the beginning. We have to help single parents, we have to help children, we have to help the older people first and as our capacity grows and we get more money – we constantly have to see that it’s sustainable though.

Several Haitian-American legislators in New York have led outrage over a Guyanese publication critical of what it describes as the influx of Haitians migrating to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member state.

An unauthored article published in the Guyana Times on Friday, under the headline, “Influx of Haitians into Guyana raises major health concerns,” has drawn the wrath of not only Haitian-Americans but of other Caribbean-American legislators and leaders.  The Guyana Times supports Guyana’s Opposition  People’s Progressive Party (PPP).

Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo Friday night appeared to tone down calls for President David Granger to announce an early election date after Guyana’s Court of Appeal ruled that the no-confidence motion was not validly passed.

He, however, said his People’s Progressive Party (PPP) would continue to demand that the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) be in a state of readiness for  early polls because the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) could soon decide whether Friday’s decision by the Appeal Court that last December’s no-confidence motion needed 34 instead of 33 votes was valid.
