Dear Colleague:

Greetings and best wishes for the new day. How did Queen’s College influence your musical life/tastes?  This e-mail requests your participation in an initiative to commemorate Queen’s College’s 170th anniversary.

Since August 6, 1844, Queen’s College has been an important institution in Guyanese society.  Norman Cameron’s A History of the Queen’s College of British Guiana [Guyana] and Laurence Clarke’s Queen’s College of Guyana:  Records of a Tradition of Excellence (1844–1994) provide valuable information on the history of the school and a record of achievements.  There is need to complement those core works with deeper explorations of the school’s contribution to Guyanese social, scientific, political and cultural life.

The initiative referred to above will focus on Q. C’s contribution to Guyanese musical life since 1844.  Over the past week, a conversation with this focus was launched on the Facebook site—“Queen’s College and Guyanese musical life since 1844.”   Continue reading

On your mark! Set! GONE! – By Earl John

The story below by Earl John shows the energy, drive, direction and collaboration of our fore-parents.  They nurtured the youth and cared for the aged (Archer Home for senior citizens).   We must celebrate the work of the African Development Association, ADA.  I read it at The Commemoration Committee meeting and others recently and they all said to me that it should be publicized …. it had ‘value’.

According to Vibert Lampkin, who delivered the eulogy, “Moore was one of the great all-round Guyanese sportsmen of his generation.
“He excelled in football, cricket, hockey and table tennis. I once heard it said that ‘Maurice Moore had the best ‘ball sense’ of anyone of his era’” said Lampkin.  (Stabroek News)

Letter on Denis Solomon – by Joey Jagan

Letter on Denis Solomon – by Joey Jagan

Dear Editor,

I would like to share, from personal experience, the achievements which Guyanese are capable of by relating the educational voyage which an old friend of mine completed with great distinction. Denis Solomon , a school-mate of mine from Queens College(1961-1967), was always an achiever and always brought home to his Syrian – Guyanese parents living on Smyth Street , grades which were always at the top of his form(class) at QC. Denis, I remember, always won prizes for bringing first or second each and every term at QC and was a good friend and one to look up to with admiration because of his disciplined approach to his studies, his humour and unique Syrian-Guyanese “look”, respectful and correct in every way and always, neat and well dressed. My father , President Cheddi, always liked Denis’ disposition and encouraged me to be more like him, especially in my studies; these were the times when Denis often visited at Red House to play cricket and just “hang out”.           Continue reading
