Real Old Guyana Calypso – Bill Rogers – 3 videos

Real Old Guyana Calypso – Bill Rogers

Here are three really vintage Guyanese calypso recordings by Bill Rogers,(Real name Augustus Hinds), a Guyanese singer from the 1930’s and 1940’s. This type of music was called “Shanto”. Have a listen and a laugh at the lyrics as they scrool down as the music is played.   Enjoy!!

B.G BHAJI

B.G.(which stood for British Guiana in Bill Rogers’ time )was probably his most popular song. It was re-made by other artistes and was also used in commercial jingles.

JIMMY BLACK PUDDING AND SOUSE

As one comment said: “Love this old song, brings back memories of Hunt`s cook up served late night at Bourda Market green and also Nut- Channa man at Camp Street by the jail”.

WEED SONG

Old time Guyanese Shanto Song from the 1930’s sung by Bill Rogers. It’s about a woman selling medicinal plants

I was quite surprised how much Bill Rogers
could get into 3-minutes …B.G. Bhaji -listen
to the end -that’s how the fight [row] started
    Reminisce!!

Keep up the good works. Your links are most impressive and you have succeeded in putting Guyana brightly on the map. The calypso music are great but I do not know any since it was way before me, however, I heard my parents talking about them especially B G Bhaji. Thanks again and keep the world informed on how lovely Guyana is.

Thank you Tina for your words of encouragement.
We must not lose our history or heritage by being distracted by the “modernity” of this age of attention deficit and built in obsolescence. We cannot relive the past but we should never dismiss the works of our ancestors!
I am glad that i can help by featuring the works of others in a forum where all can enjoy the works of previous generations of Guyanese who worked tirelessly to make the then British Guiana, the jewel of the British colonies in the Caribbean.
Will Rogers was before my time as well. It was before radio in its present form. It is a blessing that he was recorded and that we could, today, via the Internet all share in the entertainment of our grandparents.

      Hello Derek:
      Thanks for your comments.
I spend some years in Buxton (next door to Vigilance) during the 1950’s. My dad was school master at Lusignan School from 1945-1962. I moved to the city in 1958. I know the East Coast very well and loved growing up there.

Glad you liked the music. Glad i could share it with you and the many visitors to the Blog..
      Cheers

      Cy
